Victorville, California — What should have been an ordinary Friday evening for two Southern California teenagers ended in tragedy when best friends Maddalyn Dailey and Isabell Hill were killed in a horrific Victorville crash.
The two girls, known affectionately to their families as “Maddy” and “Izzy,” had been friends since elementary school and were students at Sultana High School. They had only recently started their senior year.
Maddalyn was due to turn 18 in November.
Her father, Dustin Dailey, remembered his daughter as his beloved child and described the devastating moment he realized something had gone terribly wrong.
“She was my baby girl,” he told.
Teen Girls Were Inseparable
Family members said Maddalyn and Isabell shared an exceptionally close friendship.
“They were ride or die,” Dailey said of his daughter and Isabell. “They were inseparable.”
Isabell’s mother, Megan Delang, remembered her daughter as “so smart, so kind” and “beautiful.” On the night of the crash, Maddalyn was driving Isabell home before planning to return to her own family for dinner.
Dailey recalled his daughter telling him she would quickly drop her friend off.
“She says, ‘OK, I’m going to run Izzy home real quick.’ OK, see you when you get back,” he said.
But less than a minute later, Dailey heard a devastating impact.
“I heard the impact, and I automatically knew,” he recalled.
Multiple Vehicles Collided at High Speed
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on Aug. 14 when Maddalyn’s Acura entered Ridgecrest Road from Elmwood Drive.
At the same time, the drivers of a Chevrolet Camaro and a Dodge were reportedly traveling northbound on Ridgecrest Road at high speeds.
Investigators believe the two drivers may have known each other. Both vehicles struck Maddalyn’s Acura, and authorities said the force of the collision was so severe that the Acura was split in half.
The devastating impact claimed the lives of both teenagers.
One Driver Arrested as Another Allegedly Flees
The Dodge driver was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, according to authorities. The driver of the other vehicle allegedly fled the scene and remained unidentified as of Monday.
Authorities also said the fleeing driver left his child at the crash site before getting away. Investigators had not released the identity of the arrested driver or a detailed description of the person believed to have fled.
Residents told local media they suspected the vehicles may have been racing, but authorities have not confirmed that allegation. Investigators also have not confirmed reports that the speeding vehicles may have been traveling without their headlights on.
Residents Say Road Has Long Been Dangerous
The deadly crash has renewed concerns about safety along Ridgecrest Road.
Longtime neighborhood resident Dale Lee said speeding has been an ongoing problem in the area and that residents have spent years asking for additional safety measures.
Lee said he heard the collision from inside his home and described a dangerous feature of the roadway that can make approaching vehicles difficult to see.
“You could see that there’s a dip and the car will completely disappear,” he said.
He said neighbors have repeatedly tried to get officials to address the problem.
“We’ve been trying for years to get them to do something,” Lee said.
Community Mourns Two Teenagers
A memorial has since been created near the crash site as friends, classmates and community members mourn the deaths of the two young women.
Senior activities at Sultana High School have been postponed, while fundraising efforts are underway to help support the grieving families.
For Maddalyn’s loved ones, the tragedy has also transformed everyday memories into painful reminders of what they lost. Her father said he now wishes he could go back and change small moments that once seemed insignificant.
“I wouldn’t complain over dirty dishes, I wouldn’t complain,” Dailey said. “I would do anything to have her back right now.”
He also continues to think about the final conversation he had with his daughter before she left home.
“I wish I would have told her no, you have to stay home,” he said. “She’s always been such a good girl. There’s just no reason that she couldn’t hang out with them. It was Friday night.”
The California Highway Patrol told local media that investigators had not yet located the person of interest believed to have fled the crash scene.
As the investigation continues, two families are left grieving the loss of Maddalyn and Isabell — two best friends who had expected to spend their senior year together, but whose lives were tragically cut short.
