Raleigh, North Carolina — A North Carolina school community is mourning the death of a beloved teacher and basketball coach after she was found stabbed inside her Raleigh home.
The victim was identified as Sheremy Gwenette Dillard, 57, an educator who had made a name for herself through her work with high school girls’ basketball programs in the area.
Authorities later arrested her boyfriend, Rickey Harper, 60, in Plymouth Township, Pennsylvania, in connection with the killing. Harper has been charged with first-degree murder.
The arrest came after investigators tracked his movements following Dillard’s death, with law enforcement crediting Flock cameras for helping locate the suspect.
Police Track Suspect During Two-Hour Search
According to the reported investigation, authorities spent approximately two and a half hours tracking Harper’s movements after determining that he had allegedly fled the Raleigh area.
Flock camera technology played an important role in helping investigators follow his route and determine where he had gone. The search eventually led authorities to Plymouth Township, Pennsylvania, where Harper was taken into custody.
The arrest brought an end to the immediate search for the suspect, but left Dillard’s students, colleagues and loved ones struggling to process her death.
Dillard Was a High School Basketball Pioneer
Dillard was more than a basketball coach. She served as a recovery teacher and became the inaugural head coach of the girls’ basketball team at Felton Grove High School in Apex, which opened last August.
Before joining Felton Grove, she had also served as the inaugural head coach of the girls’ basketball team at Carrboro High School in Carrboro.
Her work in education and athletics made her a familiar and respected figure among students and staff.
Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools spokesperson Andy Jenks described Dillard as someone who treated players, coaches and colleagues like family while also being willing to have difficult conversations when advocating for students and equity.
School Communities Mourn Beloved Coach
The loss has affected multiple school communities where Dillard worked and built relationships.
Jenks said many current Jaguar students and staff had strong relationships with Coach Dillard, adding that the community would need to rely on one another while processing the tragedy.
At Felton Grove High School, Principal Robert Morrison also sent a message to students and families expressing condolences.
He emphasized the importance of coming together as a unified school community and supporting one another during the difficult period.
The school also shared mental health resources for students and families affected by Dillard’s death.
Murder Charge Follows Tragic Loss
Harper’s arrest and first-degree murder charge now move the case into the criminal justice system as investigators continue working through the circumstances surrounding Dillard’s death.
The killing has left a particularly painful void because Dillard had recently taken on a leadership role at a new school and was helping establish its girls’ basketball program.
