Atlanta, Georgia — A 19-year-old behavioral therapist who dedicated her time to helping children with autism is being remembered for her compassion and creativity after she was fatally shot while riding in a car with a friend earlier this month. Authorities have now arrested a teenage suspect who investigators say had a prior history of alleged violence involving the victim’s friend.
Police Arrest Teen Suspect in Fatal Shooting
The Atlanta Police Department announced that 19-year-old Amari Haugabook was arrested on July 23 in connection with the fatal shooting of Dre’Ana Shellman, who was killed on July 6.
According to investigators, Shellman was shot in Atlanta and later pronounced dead at a local hospital after emergency responders rushed her for treatment.
Police said their investigation determined that Haugabook was the boyfriend of Shellman’s friend, who was also inside the vehicle when the shooting occurred.
While authorities have not yet formally announced the specific criminal charges, they said charges are forthcoming as the investigation continues.
Investigators Link Suspect to Previous Domestic Violence Allegations
According to investigators, the fatal shooting came just one month after Haugabook allegedly assaulted his girlfriend in a separate incident.
Local reports, citing arrest warrants, state that the suspect allegedly used bear spray on his girlfriend, took her phone as she attempted to call 911, and allegedly spit on her during the confrontation.
The reports further state that he faced allegations including armed robbery, aggravated assault, simple battery, and interfering with an emergency phone call in that earlier case.
Those allegations were reported by local media, and authorities have not publicly provided additional details as the investigation into Shellman’s death remains active.
Shooting Occurred While Victim Rode with Friend
Investigators allege that Shellman was riding in a vehicle with Haugabook’s girlfriend when the suspect opened fire on the car.
Police have not released additional information regarding what led up to the shooting or whether the victims had attempted to leave before the gunfire erupted.
Authorities also have not disclosed how many shots were fired or whether anyone else inside the vehicle suffered injuries.
