Lighthouse Point, Florida — A quiet South Florida neighborhood was shaken Thursday morning after a loose dog allegedly attacked a family’s pet, prompting the pet’s owner to fatally shoot the animal in an effort to stop the attack, according to police.
The incident also left one resident injured after the second loose dog reportedly bit them while roaming the neighborhood.
Loose Dogs Escaped Before Attack Began
According to the Lighthouse Point Police Department, the incident happened at approximately 10:15 a.m. Thursday after two dogs escaped from a fenced-in yard and wandered through a residential neighborhood.
Authorities said the dogs eventually reached a home in the 2600 block of Northeast 52nd Street, where they encountered a much smaller dog that was on the front porch.
Police said one of the loose dogs attacked the smaller pet, triggering a desperate attempt by the dog’s owner and nearby neighbors to separate the animals.
Pet Owner Retrieved Gun During Ongoing Attack
Investigators said the owner of the smaller dog and several neighbors attempted to stop the attack but were unsuccessful.
According to police, the owner then retrieved a firearm and shot the attacking dog, killing it at the scene. Officials have not identified the individuals involved, and authorities have not indicated how many shots were fired.
The smaller dog survived the attack and was transported to a local veterinary hospital for treatment. Its current condition has not been publicly released.
Second Dog Bit Resident Before Returning Home
While the first attack was unfolding, the second loose dog fled the area before encountering another resident nearby. Police said the dog bit the resident on the leg, causing a puncture wound.
Emergency responders treated the injured person at the scene, and no hospitalization was immediately reported. Authorities said the second dog later returned to its residence, where it was secured by its caretaker.
Animal Care Officials Identify Dogs
According to Broward County Animal Care, the two loose dogs involved in the incident were identified as American Staffordshire Terrier mixes.
The smaller dog attacked on the front porch was identified as a Spaniel.
Officials also confirmed that the surviving dog has been placed under quarantine, which is standard procedure following a reported dog bite while authorities complete their investigation.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
The Lighthouse Point Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
At this stage, no criminal charges have been filed, and officials have not announced whether any citations or additional enforcement actions will be taken.
Investigators are expected to review witness statements and other evidence before determining whether further action is warranted.
