Student Suspended After Coming Out as Gay Wins $10,000 Settlement From Tennessee School

Bradley County, Tennessee — More than a year after a graduating high school senior filed a lawsuit challenging her suspension from a private Christian school, the case has ended with a settlement that includes a financial payment and the removal of disciplinary action from her record.

According to a final judgment order entered in Bradley County Chancery Court, Morgan Armstrong and Tennessee Christian Preparatory School have reached a resolution that includes a $10,000 payment to Armstrong and the rescission of her suspension.

The agreement closes a case that attracted widespread attention after Armstrong alleged she was disciplined shortly after publicly sharing that she was in a same-sex relationship.

Social Media Post Sparked Dispute

The controversy began in April 2025 when Armstrong, then an 18-year-old senior preparing to graduate, posted a photo on social media with her girlfriend.

The post reportedly included the caption:

“cats outta the bag.”

A screenshot included in court filings showed the couple holding hands and sharing a kiss.

Speaking publicly about the post, Armstrong said she did not believe she should be treated differently than other students who shared photos of their relationships online.

“Everyone else gets to post their boyfriend or girlfriend. So just because I have a girlfriend and I’m a girl, why does that mean that I shouldn’t be able to?” Armstrong said. “I love my girlfriend and I wanted to show it.”

Days later, she was called into the school’s administrative office and given a suspension notice.

Suspension Prevented Graduation Participation

According to court documents, the suspension barred Armstrong from returning to campus and prohibited her from attending school activities, including graduation ceremonies.

The complaint also alleged the school threatened to withhold her diploma and negatively affect her college admissions opportunities if online criticism of the school appeared.

School officials additionally cited comments Armstrong made in a private message to friends as part of their disciplinary decision.

However, Armstrong disputed the school’s interpretation of those remarks, arguing that the comments referred to certain relatives rather than anyone associated with the school.

Her lawsuit claimed the disciplinary action was actually connected to her decision to publicly reveal her sexual orientation.

The complaint further argued that even if a policy violation had occurred, the punishment exceeded what school guidelines allowed for a first offense.

Settlement Removes Suspension Record

As part of the final agreement, both parties acknowledged that they continue to disagree about the extent to which Armstrong violated school policies.

Despite those disagreements, the settlement officially rescinds her suspension.

The agreement also states that the school did not contact colleges or universities to disparage Armstrong and prohibits such conduct moving forward.

In addition to removing the disciplinary action, the school agreed to pay $10,000 to Armstrong. The settlement resolves the lawsuit and brings the legal dispute to a close.

Attorneys Say Case Sends Important Message

Following the settlement, attorney Daniel Horwitz praised Armstrong for challenging the disciplinary action.

“School is a place where every student is entitled to feel welcome, accepted, and supported.”

Horwitz also criticized efforts to discipline students because of their sexual orientation.

“It is not a place where any administrator should feel comfortable disciplining or threatening kids for being gay.”

Meanwhile, Tennessee Christian Preparatory School released a statement emphasizing that both sides continue to disagree about whether school policies were violated.

The school said the disagreement remains unresolved but that both parties agreed to move forward without further public comment.

Case Concludes After Months of Legal Proceedings

While neither side fully changed its position regarding the underlying dispute, the settlement ends the litigation and clears Armstrong’s disciplinary record.

For Armstrong and her family, the resolution marks the end of a legal battle that began shortly before what should have been one of the most significant milestones of her high school years.
