Orlando, Florida — What should have been the final leg of an international journey turned into a frustrating overnight ordeal for hundreds of travelers after severe weather caused lengthy baggage delays at Orlando International Airport.
Passengers arriving on three Virgin Atlantic flights over the weekend said they spent more than five hours waiting inside the airport’s international arrivals area before they could retrieve their checked luggage and complete the customs process.
The delays affected nearly 800 international travelers, many of whom described the experience as one of the most difficult they had ever encountered.
Storms Disrupt Airport Operations
According to airport officials, the delays were caused by adverse weather, including thunderstorms that temporarily halted ground operations.
Passengers said baggage handling was suspended during a roughly 90-minute storm, followed by an additional safety delay because of lightning before crews could resume working on the airfield.
While luggage from two of the three Virgin Atlantic flights was eventually processed, passengers from the third flight said their baggage failed to arrive for several more hours.
The extended wait left many travelers stranded inside the international customs area late into the night.
Travelers Describe Long Wait Inside Customs Area
Among those affected was Carol Wick, who had just completed a two-week trip to Croatia before finally arriving home in Orlando.
After dealing with multiple delayed flights and one cancellation during her return journey, Wick said the airport experience became the most frustrating part of the trip.
“Three delayed flights, one canceled flight and now trapped at the Orlando airport. It’s officially over 48 hrs trying to get home,” she wrote on social media.
Because of U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s “bags first” policy, international passengers are generally required to collect their checked luggage before completing customs and exiting the secure area.
As a result, travelers said they were unable to leave while waiting for their baggage.
Passengers Raise Concerns About Conditions
Several passengers described difficult conditions while waiting inside the customs area.
According to travelers, there were limited places to sit, and families with young children and elderly passengers were forced to remain inside the secure area for hours.
Wick said the lack of information from airport and airline representatives made the situation even more frustrating.
“There’s no place to sit, there’s babies, there’s elderly people and we’re all laying, sitting on the ground trying to find something to lean on,” Wick said.
She also claimed passengers were told they could not leave without their checked luggage.
Some travelers alleged they were warned they could face arrest if they exited without their bags. However, both Orlando International Airport officials and the Orlando Police Department disputed those claims, saying passengers were not threatened with arrest.
Airline Apologizes After Delay
Following the incident, Virgin Atlantic apologized to affected passengers.
The airline acknowledged that the severe weather created significant operational challenges and recognized the inconvenience caused by the extended wait.
According to reports, airline representatives also expressed regret that travelers had limited access to food and other amenities while remaining inside the customs area.
Eventually, all passengers were reunited with their luggage, bringing the lengthy delay to an end.
Weather Continues to Affect Air Travel
Severe thunderstorms frequently impact Florida airports during the summer, often forcing temporary ground stops for the safety of airport employees and flight crews.
While weather-related delays are common, many passengers said clearer communication and additional accommodations could have helped ease the experience during the extended wait.
Airport officials continue reminding international travelers that customs procedures may require passengers to remain inside secure areas until baggage processing is complete.
