Tucson, Arizona — A family in Arizona is mourning the loss of a grandmother they describe as a “beacon of light” after an alleged random assault outside her apartment complex left her with fatal brain injuries just days before she was set to celebrate her 62nd birthday and begin the retirement she had spent decades working toward.
The tragic case has now led to a second-degree murder charge, as loved ones remember a woman who had already overcome cancer twice before her life was cut short in what they call a senseless act of violence.
Family Says Grandmother Was Attacked Outside Her Apartment
According to family members, Susan Gehrke was sitting on the patio of her apartment complex in Tucson on the evening of July 24 when a man allegedly approached her and another person.
Police allege that 27-year-old Dahseir Edward Jefferson suddenly punched Gehrke in the face with such force that part of her dentures came out as she fell backward, striking her head on the ground.
The impact left Gehrke unconscious, and emergency responders rushed her to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Family members later told local media that the injuries were so severe they left her “unrecognizable.”
Brain Injuries Proved Fatal Days Later
Doctors treated Gehrke for a brain bleed, but despite medical efforts, she died on July 29, several days after the attack. Her death came just days before her 62nd birthday and only a short time before she planned to retire after years of work.
According to her family, Gehrke had already survived cancer twice, making her sudden death even more devastating for those who knew her.
Suspect Now Faces Murder Charge
Authorities arrested Dahseir Edward Jefferson on July 28, initially charging him with two counts of aggravated assault. Following Gehrke’s death, prosecutors upgraded one of those charges to second-degree murder, according to local reports.
Jail records show Jefferson is being held at the Pima County Adult Detention Complex on a $650,000 bond while the criminal case moves forward.
The allegations against him have not yet been proven in court, and the case remains pending.
Family Remembers a Life Dedicated to Others
In an online fundraiser, Gehrke’s family described her as someone who always put others before herself.
They said she spent decades working hard while caring for her family and had been eagerly counting down the days until retirement.
According to the family, she had looked forward to spending more time with her children and grandchildren, relaxing, and finally enjoying the next chapter of her life after years of dedication and sacrifice.
Instead, they say those dreams were taken away in an instant.
The fundraiser described Gehrke as “a beacon of light to everyone who knew her,” adding that her family remains heartbroken over the unexpected loss.
Community Mourns as Investigation Continues
The case has drawn attention across the Tucson community as investigators continue pursuing the criminal prosecution.
For Gehrke’s loved ones, however, the focus remains on remembering the woman they say overcame enormous challenges throughout her life, only to lose it in an act they believe never should have happened.
They say the grief is made even more painful knowing she was on the verge of enjoying the retirement she had worked so hard to achieve after surviving so much.
