Nashville, Tennessee — Nearly a decade after a devastating school bus crash that claimed the lives of six elementary school children, the former Tennessee bus driver convicted in the case is back behind bars. Johnthony Walker, 34, has been arrested on a new series of criminal charges, adding another chapter to a lengthy criminal history that already included convictions for negligent homicide and rape.
Former School Bus Driver Arrested on New Charges
According to records from the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, Walker was booked into a Nashville jail earlier this week and is facing seven new charges connected to an alleged domestic violence incident.
The charges include aggravated assault by strangulation, aggravated burglary, child abuse, interference with an emergency call, along with three alleged violations related to sex offender registration requirements.
Authorities have not publicly released additional details about the alleged incident or the identities of those involved. The case remains pending as Walker moves through the legal process.
2016 School Bus Crash Killed Six Children
Walker first drew national attention following the November 2016 school bus crash in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Investigators said he was transporting elementary school students when he drove at excessive speeds along an unauthorized route.
Court records stated that the bus struck a mailbox and a utility pole before overturning and crashing into a tree.
The violent collision killed six children and injured dozens of others, making it one of Tennessee’s deadliest school bus accidents in recent history.
Following a trial, Walker was convicted of negligent homicide in 2018 and sentenced to four years in prison for his role in the fatal crash.
Separate Rape Conviction Added More Prison Time
Walker’s legal troubles did not end with the school bus case.
In 2020, prosecutors in Davidson County announced that he had pleaded guilty to rape in an unrelated case.
As part of that conviction, Walker received a prison sentence of six years and one month, which was ordered to run consecutively to his sentence in the school bus crash case.
The conviction also required him to register as a sex offender after his release.
Latest Arrest Includes Sex Offender Registration Violations
The newest criminal case is unrelated to either Walker’s school bus crash conviction or his rape conviction.
In addition to the domestic violence-related allegations, authorities have accused Walker of failing to comply with multiple sex offender registration requirements, leading to three additional charges.
Officials have not disclosed whether Walker has entered pleas in the new case or whether he has retained legal representation. As of now, the allegations remain pending, and prosecutors have not announced when the case will next appear in court.
