A Nashville, Tennessee, family is finally seeing movement in a tragic case that changed their lives forever after a suspect surrendered to authorities nearly nine months after a devastating head-on crash claimed the life of a husband and father.
James Brewington Jr., 61, turned himself in to the Metro Nashville Police Department on July 23 in connection with the November 2025 crash that killed Dustin McLeod, 41, and left McLeod’s wife and daughter with serious injuries. Police confirmed that Brewington was booked into jail and remains behind bars on a $135,000 bond.
Suspect Faces Multiple Serious Charges
According to investigators, Brewington has been charged with vehicular homicide by reckless conduct, reckless endangerment, and three counts of aggravated assault.
Police say the deadly collision happened on Nov. 9, 2025, near Bobel Lane in Nashville. Investigators allege Brewington was driving his Nissan Titan pickup truck southbound when he attempted to pass a vehicle making a right turn. During the maneuver, his truck reportedly crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed head-on into a Jeep Renegade carrying Dustin McLeod, his wife Ashley, and their young daughter.
The impact proved fatal for Dustin, who was rushed to Skyline Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
Widow Recalls the Horrific Moments of the Crash
Speaking about the terrifying crash, Ashley McLeod described how everything unfolded within seconds.
“All of a sudden, a car came out in front of us. It all happened really fast. I just saw the flash of red and everything was kind of in slow motion.”
She recalled watching the violent collision unfold in front of her eyes.
“I watched my daughter’s body go around her seatbelt. I watched my husband fly forward. I got hit with the airbag, which knocked the wind out of me for several minutes.”
Ashley said the terrifying ordeal became even worse after the crash.
“The car caught on fire. My husband wasn’t responding to me, my daughter was screaming in the back seat.”
Family Continues to Struggle Months Later
Although months have passed since the crash, Ashley says the emotional and financial consequences continue to affect her family.
Ashley suffered a shattered leg, while their daughter wore a neck brace for months following the collision. She explained that the medical expenses forced her into difficult financial decisions.
“I had to sublet my house out to be able to afford the bills. We’ve been struggling physically, mentally, emotionally, financially.”
The arrest of Brewington has provided some comfort, even though the pain of losing her husband remains.
Arrest Brings Relief as Family Awaits Justice
Ashley described seeing Brewington for the first time since the crash as an emotional experience.
“I hadn’t seen his face until today, so that was a bit jarring. It’s definitely a relief to know that justice will be done in whatever way that happens.”
She also shared a heartfelt tribute to Dustin, remembering him as someone who left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
“The most genuine human being that you will ever meet.”
She added:
“You always knew where you stood with him. He was the realest person. He had the best sense of humor. He’s just an incredible man.”
As the criminal case moves forward, Dustin McLeod’s family says they hope the legal process will finally bring accountability after months of grief and uncertainty.
