Central Islip, New York — A Fourth of July celebration on Long Island turned tragic after a man was killed when a firework exploded in his face during a backyard gathering, while another man was seriously injured in a separate fireworks accident later that evening, according to police.
The incidents occurred just minutes apart on Saturday night as families across the region gathered to celebrate Independence Day.
Backyard Firework Explosion Turns Fatal
According to the Suffolk County Police Department, Gabriel Ruiz-Urresto, 37, was lighting a mortar-style firework outside his Central Islip home when the device unexpectedly exploded.
Police said the firework struck Ruiz-Urresto in the head at approximately 9:30 p.m., causing catastrophic injuries.
Emergency medical personnel quickly responded to the scene and attempted to provide life-saving treatment. However, despite their efforts, Ruiz-Urresto was pronounced dead.
Authorities have not released additional details about what caused the firework to malfunction or whether the incident remains under investigation.
Second Firework Accident Leaves Man Seriously Injured
Earlier that same evening, another fireworks-related emergency unfolded at Callahans Beach on Long Island.
Police said Jerry DiMucci, 45, of Fort Salonga, was injured after a firework he had lit exploded in his face around 8:50 p.m. during an Independence Day celebration.
Emergency crews transported DiMucci to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment.
According to investigators, he suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive. Officials have not released further information about the type of firework involved in the beach incident.
Two Serious Incidents on the Same Holiday
The two accidents occurred less than an hour apart, highlighting the dangers that fireworks can pose even during family celebrations.
Mortar-style fireworks, in particular, are designed to launch into the air before exploding overhead. However, if they malfunction or are improperly positioned, they can cause devastating injuries.
