Chino, California — A Fourth of July celebration in Chino turned tragic after a powerful fireworks explosion killed a young woman, injured three others—including a child—and led to the arrest of a Southern California man on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter.
According to the Chino Police Department, the explosion occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. on D Street during a neighborhood Independence Day gathering where a large group had assembled to celebrate the holiday.
Investigators believe a large quantity of fireworks suddenly ignited, triggering a massive explosion that sent debris flying, set a vehicle on fire and left multiple people with serious injuries.
Fireworks Explosion Sparks Chaos at Neighborhood Party
Witnesses said the celebration quickly descended into panic after fireworks being set off at the gathering exploded unexpectedly.
Dramatic videos captured in the moments after the blast showed people screaming for help as smoke filled the area and flames engulfed a nearby vehicle.
Other footage showed first responders arriving within minutes and treating injured victims while neighbors urged everyone to move away from the dangerous scene.
“Back up, back up, back up… everybody get back!” one person can be heard shouting in video recorded immediately after the explosion.
Police said three adults suffered severe injuries and were transported to local hospitals.
One of those victims, a woman in her 20s, later died from her injuries. The other two injured adults are expected to survive. A fourth victim, identified only as a juvenile, was taken to a hospital for evaluation before later being released to a parent or guardian.
Witnesses Describe Terrifying Moments After the Blast
Residents who rushed outside after hearing the explosion described scenes of confusion and fear. Eyewitness Gabriel Gilmore said he was inside his mother’s home when the explosion occurred.
“It clearly looked like there was a bunch of illegal fireworks in the trunk,” Gilmore said. “I don’t know how the trunk got lit up, but obviously, you could see from the video that the truck hatch was busted open, and that was where the point of the explosion was.”
Neighbor Stephanie Moreno said families immediately focused on getting children away from the danger.
“Everyone was saying, ‘Get back! Get Back!’ I just tried to keep my kids and our family over here, because we had family over, and it was just really scary,” Moreno said. “It’s a shame to see that not all the families got to walk away.”
Witnesses also reported that a nearby palm tree briefly caught fire following the explosion.
Police Arrest 28-Year-Old During Investigation
As investigators worked through the night, police detained Derion Tradon James Jr., 28, of Hesperia. Authorities later booked him into the West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter.
Investigators have not yet released additional details explaining what role James allegedly played in the incident or whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
Investigation Continues
By Sunday morning, debris remained scattered across the neighborhood, while damaged vehicles and destroyed property highlighted the force of the explosion. The homeowner was seen replacing a damaged fence with a temporary blue tarp as investigators continued documenting the scene.
The Chino Police Department is leading the investigation alongside the Chino Valley Fire District and the Ontario Fire Bomb Squad. Once completed, the criminal case will be submitted to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office for review.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective Gregory at 909-334-3136. The investigation remains active as officials continue working to determine exactly how the deadly fireworks explosion occurred.
