Houston, Texas — A federal immigration enforcement operation in Houston’s East End turned deadly Tuesday morning after an ICE officer shot and killed a man during what authorities described as a targeted enforcement action. The incident is now under investigation, while the victim’s family is publicly challenging the federal government’s version of events.
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the shooting occurred shortly before 7 a.m. near the intersection of Canal Street and Wayside Drive.
Federal officials identified the man as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who they said was in the United States illegally from Mexico.
ICE Says Driver Used Vehicle Against Officers
ICE officials said officers attempted to stop Araujo’s vehicle as part of a targeted enforcement operation.
According to investigators, Araujo allegedly attempted to flee after officers tried to pull him over. Authorities said his vehicle struck an ICE vehicle during the encounter and that he refused commands from federal agents.
Federal officials further alleged that Araujo attempted to “weaponize” his vehicle by trying to run over one of the officers.
Officials said the ICE officer then opened fire in self-defense, striking Araujo. The man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Surveillance and Cellphone Videos Capture Parts of Incident
Surveillance footage obtained by local media reportedly shows a white van traveling along Wayside Drive before turning onto Canal Street, with two dark SUVs following behind.
The video appears to show one SUV moving ahead of the van while another remained behind it. The van later made a U-turn before pulling over near a business, where one of the SUVs stopped beside it.
Separate cellphone footage recorded by bystanders reportedly showed officers surrounding a man lying on the ground after the shooting as emergency crews responded.
The videos do not appear to show the full interaction leading up to the shooting.
Family Disputes Federal Version of Events
Relatives of those involved have questioned the account provided by ICE.
The stepdaughter of another man detained during the operation told local media that her stepfather called her mother to say ICE agents were following him before the call was suddenly disconnected.
She said she initially feared the man who had been shot was her stepfather before learning it was someone else.
The woman also disputed ICE’s description of the incident, saying she believes officials are not telling the full truth about what happened.
Meanwhile, the son of the man who was killed released a statement describing his father as a construction worker who had lived in the United States for 35 years while supporting his wife and three children.
According to the family, Araujo was also in the process of obtaining a work permit, and they said he did not deserve what happened.
The family has announced plans to hold a press conference.
Multiple Investigations Now Underway
The FBI is leading the investigation into the alleged assault on a federal law enforcement officer, while the Department of Homeland Security is conducting a separate investigation into the agent-involved shooting.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire declined to comment on the incident.
Following the shooting, numerous law enforcement vehicles blocked the surrounding streets as residents gathered nearby. Witnesses at the scene were visibly emotional, with several people seen crying as investigators processed the area.
As the investigations continue, authorities are expected to review surveillance footage, witness statements and other evidence to determine the full sequence of events surrounding the fatal encounter.
