Hilo, Hawaii — Hurricane Fausto has strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane over the Pacific Ocean, prompting forecasters to closely monitor its path as the storm moves in the general direction of the Hawaiian Islands.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Fausto is currently packing maximum sustained winds of around 100 mph while remaining well offshore. Although the hurricane is still far from land, meteorologists say the possibility of impacts on Hawaii is becoming more likely, even as significant uncertainty remains about the storm’s future track and strength.
Officials stress that residents should continue monitoring forecasts as the situation evolves over the coming days.
Hurricane Fausto Remains Far From Land
As of the latest advisory, Fausto was located about 1,300 miles west of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula and roughly 1,600 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii.
Despite its remote location, the storm has continued to organize over open waters, allowing it to strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane.

The National Hurricane Center warned that these swells could produce dangerous surf and life-threatening rip currents along portions of Southern California’s coastline in the coming days.

Tropical Storm Bertha Has Dissipated
While attention turns to Hurricane Fausto, forecasters have confirmed that Tropical Storm Bertha has dissipated after bringing heavy rain, rough surf and localized flooding to parts of Louisiana and Texas.
Bertha made two landfalls along the Gulf Coast, first affecting southern Louisiana before moving into Texas, where it weakened rapidly.
Although the storm has lost its tropical characteristics, its remnants are still expected to produce 1 to 3 inches of rainfall, with isolated areas receiving up to 4 inches, raising the risk of flash flooding across portions of coastal and South Texas.
Officials also noted that tropical storm-force wind gusts and elevated water levels could continue for a short time after the storm’s dissipation.
Bertha’s Impacts Were Limited
Despite causing flooding and hazardous coastal conditions, Bertha did not result in any reported fatalities or widespread structural damage.
The storm also forced SpaceX to postpone a planned Starship launch from South Texas because of poor weather conditions. The test flight was later rescheduled as forecasters expected improved weather.
As Bertha fades away, meteorologists are shifting their focus to Hurricane Fausto, which remains the primary tropical system being monitored in the Pacific.
