Florida Teen’s Heroic Attempt to Protect Her Mom Ends in Tragedy as Killer Gets Life Sentence

Tampa, Florida — A Florida man will spend the rest of his life in prison after being convicted of killing his girlfriend and her teenage daughter, a case prosecutors described as a heartbreaking act of violence that destroyed an entire family.

On Monday, Jean Pierre Ojeda Salazar, 27, was sentenced to life in prison after a jury found him guilty of two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Paula Cabrejo Molina and her 14-year-old daughter, Mariana Cabrejo.

Although prosecutors sought the harshest punishment available, jurors ultimately chose not to impose the death penalty.

Deadly Attack Unfolded Inside Apartment

According to the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office, the killings occurred on the morning of Nov. 26, 2023, at The Lodge at Hidden River apartments in Tampa.

Prosecutors said a woman who shared the apartment with the victims witnessed part of the attack and later testified during the trial. The witness told jurors she saw Ojeda Salazar attacking Cabrejo Molina in a bedroom when Mariana rushed in and attempted to intervene.

Instead of escaping the violence, the teenager became a victim herself. Authorities said the suspect fatally attacked both mother and daughter before fleeing the scene.

Prosecutors Detail Teen’s Final Moments

During court proceedings, prosecutors described the terror Mariana experienced as she tried to defend her mother. According to testimony presented during the penalty phase, the teenager witnessed the violence unfold before attempting to stop it.

“She had a front-row seat to her mother’s own suffering,” prosecutor Lindsey Hodges told jurors.

“She witnessed all of it. She heard her mother’s screams. She saw her mother’s blood, and she saw how gruesomely her mother was attacked by the man who should have been saying ‘I love you.’”

Investigators said Cabrejo Molina suffered numerous stab wounds during the attack, while Mariana was also critically injured while trying to protect her mother.

Mariana was still alive when first responders arrived but later died at a hospital. Her mother was pronounced dead at the scene.

Evidence Suggested Relationship Was Ending

During the trial, prosecutors introduced text messages exchanged between Ojeda Salazar and Cabrejo Molina.

According to court records, those messages portrayed a relationship that was deteriorating and showed that Cabrejo Molina wanted to leave her boyfriend.

Investigators argued that the attack occurred as the relationship was falling apart. The jury ultimately agreed with prosecutors and convicted Ojeda Salazar of both murders.

Suspect Captured After Multi-State Search

Following the killings, authorities said Ojeda Salazar fled the apartment complex in a white sedan. Law enforcement later located the abandoned vehicle and launched a search for the suspect.

The investigation eventually led authorities to Maryland, where members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force tracked him down at his brother’s residence.

His arrest brought an end to a manhunt that stretched hundreds of miles from the crime scene.

Officials Say Verdict Brings Measure of Justice

Following the sentencing, officials acknowledged the devastating impact the crime had on the victims’ loved ones.

State Attorney Suzy Lopez said the case was tragic on every level because a mother lost her life and a young girl was killed while trying to protect someone she loved.

“This case is heartbreaking on every level. A woman lost her life, and her teenage daughter was murdered while courageously trying to protect her,” Lopez said.

Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw also expressed sympathy for the victims’ families while praising investigators who worked to locate the suspect.

While the life sentence brings legal closure to the case, officials noted that the pain endured by family members and friends will remain for years to come.
