Germantown, Maryland — A devastating early morning crash involving a stolen vehicle carrying seven teenagers left one driver dead and sent all seven juvenile occupants of the other vehicle to hospitals, according to authorities in Montgomery County.
The collision occurred before sunrise Tuesday, prompting a large emergency response as firefighters worked to rescue trapped occupants from the wreckage.
Deadly Crash Happened at Busy Intersection
According to the Montgomery County Police Department (MCP), officers responded at approximately 5:25 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, to reports of a serious collision at the intersection of Great Seneca Highway and Clopper Road in Germantown.
When officers arrived, they found a blue Toyota Matrix and a white Kia Optima with extensive damage.
Preliminary investigators believe the Kia Optima, which authorities later determined had been reported stolen, entered the intersection and collided with the Toyota Matrix traveling on Clopper Road.
The male driver of the Toyota suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet publicly released the victim’s identity.
Seven Juveniles Hospitalized Following Collision
Police said all seven occupants of the stolen Kia were juveniles between the ages of 12 and 15. Investigators reported that the juvenile driver was transported to a nearby hospital in critical but stable condition.
The remaining six teenagers sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious and were taken to several trauma centers across the region for treatment.
Officials have not released additional information about their current medical conditions.
Firefighters Rescued Occupants Trapped in Wreckage
The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) said emergency crews initially received reports that one of the vehicles had overturned and that multiple occupants were trapped inside.
Firefighters carried out extensive rescue operations, stabilizing the damaged vehicles before carefully freeing those trapped.
According to the department, crews provided emergency medical care at the scene before coordinating ambulance transports to area hospitals.
Photographs released by emergency officials showed the Toyota Matrix crushed beyond recognition, while the overturned Kia Optima rested on a hedge beside the roadway, surrounded by debris from the violent impact.
Witnesses Reported Erratic Driving Before Impact
As investigators worked to reconstruct the crash, witnesses described concerning activity shortly before the collision.
According to reports, one person contacted police to report a vehicle being driven erratically in the area before the crash occurred. Another nearby resident reported seeing a vehicle engulfed in flames after the collision.
Authorities have not confirmed whether speed, impairment, or any other factors contributed to the crash, and the investigation remains active.
Police Urge Parents to Know Where Their Children Are
Following the incident, officials reminded families about the importance of monitoring young teenagers.
A police spokesperson noted that children as young as 12 to 15 years old are not legally permitted to drive, emphasizing that parents should know where their children are and who they are spending time with.
Detectives continue gathering evidence and have not announced whether criminal charges will be filed as the investigation progresses.
