East St. Louis, Illinois — A homicide investigation in southern Illinois has drawn widespread attention after authorities arrested a 15-year-old accused of fatally stabbing a 78-year-old man, while disturbing doorbell camera footage appeared to show the suspect wearing a clown costume and approaching a nearby home shortly before the killing.
Police say the investigation is ongoing as detectives work to determine what led to the deadly attack.
Elderly Man Found Dead in the Roadway
According to the Illinois State Police (ISP), officers with the East St. Louis Police Department responded at approximately 10 p.m. Monday to the intersection of 76th Street and State Street after receiving reports of a body lying in the roadway.
When officers arrived, they found the victim suffering from multiple stab wounds. The St. Clair County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as John Wesley Allen Sr., 78, of St. Louis, Missouri.
Authorities said Allen died from the injuries sustained during the attack.
Teen Suspect Quickly Identified
Illinois State Police said investigators quickly identified a suspect during the early stages of the investigation. Detectives later located the 15-year-old suspect at a residence and took the teenager into custody.
Because the suspect is a juvenile, authorities have not released the teen’s identity.
Officials also have not announced whether prosecutors intend to seek charges in juvenile court or request that the teen be tried as an adult.
Ring Camera Video Shows Suspect in Clown Costume
As investigators continued examining the case, doorbell camera footage circulating online became a major focus.
The video reportedly shows a person wearing a clown costume approaching the front door of a nearby residence. According to local reports, the individual can be heard saying:
“I’ve been looking for you.”
The person then remained outside the home for several minutes and was also seen walking toward the back of the property before leaving.
Illinois State Police confirmed they are collecting and reviewing all relevant surveillance footage as part of the investigation.
Homeowner’s Family Describes Disturbing Encounter
The residence seen in the video belongs to the mother of Lee Palmer, according to local media. Palmer said his mother was home alone when the individual approached the house.
After watching the footage, he described the encounter as deeply unsettling. He said seeing someone wearing a clown outfit late at night made the incident especially frightening and left his family shaken.
The homeowner was not injured, and investigators have not indicated that the home was directly connected to the fatal stabbing.
Motive Remains Unknown
At this stage, investigators have not disclosed a possible motive for the killing or explained whether the victim and the suspect knew one another.
Authorities continue processing evidence and reviewing surveillance footage as they work to establish a timeline of events leading up to the attack.
The case remains under active investigation, and additional information is expected as detectives continue their work.
