Cincinnati, Ohio — Just days after heavy rainfall caused flooding across parts of the Cincinnati area, residents are once again being urged to prepare as another round of strong thunderstorms, torrential rain and possible flash flooding is expected to move through the region.
The National Weather Service says a cold front approaching the Ohio Valley will trigger multiple rounds of storms throughout Tuesday, July 21, with some storms becoming severe. While forecasters are still refining the exact timing, they warn that the weather could quickly become dangerous, especially in areas that recently received heavy rainfall.
Heavy Rain and Flash Flooding Could Return
The biggest concern with Tuesday’s weather system is the potential for very heavy rainfall capable of producing localized flash flooding.
Because the ground remains saturated in some areas following last week’s flooding, additional downpours could cause water to accumulate rapidly on roads, in low-lying neighborhoods and near creeks and streams.
Forecasters say rain chances will begin increasing during the morning before reaching 80% to 100% by around 10 a.m. Although coverage may briefly decrease around midday, another wave of storms is expected to develop during the afternoon and evening, with rain chances climbing back to 80% to 100% between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Thunderstorms may continue into the evening before gradually tapering off overnight.
Damaging Winds, Hail and Isolated Tornadoes Possible
In addition to flooding concerns, Tuesday’s storms may become severe enough to produce damaging wind gusts, which meteorologists say remain the primary threat.
However, large hail and even an isolated tornado are also possible, depending on how individual storms develop throughout the day.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather alerts and be prepared to seek shelter quickly if severe thunderstorm or tornado warnings are issued.
Officials also advise motorists to avoid driving through flooded roadways, as water levels can rise rapidly during intense rainfall.
Heat and Humidity Will Add to the Discomfort
Before cooler air arrives, much of the Cincinnati area will also experience hot and muggy conditions.
Tuesday’s high temperature is expected to reach around 89 degrees, while the heat index could climb as high as 99 degrees, making outdoor conditions feel significantly hotter.
The combination of oppressive humidity and approaching storms could create uncomfortable conditions throughout much of the day.
Cooler, Drier Weather Arrives Midweek
The unsettled weather is expected to improve once the cold front moves through the region Tuesday night.
By Wednesday, sunshine is forecast to return with temperatures dropping into the upper 70s, providing a noticeable break from both the recent heat and repeated rounds of storms.
The pleasant weather is expected to continue through Thursday and Friday, with mostly sunny skies and afternoon highs in the low 80s.
Looking ahead to the weekend, temperatures will gradually warm again, climbing into the upper 80s Saturday before reaching around 90 degrees on Sunday, although dry conditions are expected to continue.
While the return of sunshine will offer relief later in the week, forecasters say Tuesday’s severe weather could still create hazardous travel conditions and localized flooding before calmer weather finally settles into the region.
