Mexico City, Mexico — The search for a Chicago couple who disappeared while living in Mexico has ended in tragedy after authorities discovered four bodies buried in a mass grave, leading to multiple arrests in what investigators believe may be a kidnapping and robbery case.
Family members have identified Zafar Mawani and Guillermo Ortiz, both 56, as two of the victims found outside Mexico City, although officials say DNA testing is still underway to formally identify all of the remains.
The case has drawn international attention as investigators continue working to determine exactly what happened during the couple’s final hours.
Couple Disappeared During Planned Purchase
According to investigators, Mawani and Ortiz disappeared on May 20 after leaving their home in Mexico City to purchase a chairlift for Mawani’s mother.
The couple had relocated to Mexico City in October and were reportedly meeting individuals who had advertised the equipment for sale.
Authorities said the sellers allegedly asked the couple to travel to Mawani’s mother’s residence, where the chairlift was expected to be installed, in order to complete the transaction.
Before communication stopped, the couple reportedly shared their live location with a friend. That location placed them south of Mexico City near the mountainous region surrounding La Marquesa National Park.
After they failed to return home, family members and friends reported them missing.
Bodies Found in Remote Area
Nearly a month later, investigators searching the area made a grim discovery. Authorities located four bodies buried in a wooded area in Ocoyoacac, on the outskirts of Mexico City.
Investigators also reported finding additional human remains nearby. On June 24, family members confirmed that Mawani and Ortiz were believed to be among the victims.
In a statement released through family representatives, loved ones asked for privacy while authorities continue confirming details.
“We are aware of reports circulating regarding Zafar and Guillermo. We are in direct contact with authorities to confirm accurate information. We ask for patience and privacy for the family during this time.”
Officials believe the other two victims may also have been a married couple, although their identities have not yet been publicly released.
Multiple Arrests Made in Investigation
The investigation has resulted in several arrests.
Authorities said five people were taken into custody in connection with the discovery of the bodies. Among those arrested was a former police officer who investigators allege led a kidnapping and robbery group.
Officials also reported recovering ammunition, narcotics, and other evidence during the arrests. In addition, two other suspects were reportedly arrested in connection with the disappearance and deaths of Mawani and Ortiz.
Authorities have not released additional information regarding the specific roles each suspect allegedly played.
Investigation Continues as DNA Testing Proceeds
Although family members have identified the Chicago couple, prosecutors said forensic specialists continue conducting DNA testing to officially identify all four victims.
Several law enforcement agencies have participated in the investigation, including Mexico City’s Attorney General’s Office, the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Missing Persons, the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, and the State of Mexico Attorney General’s Office.
Investigators continue gathering evidence as the criminal case moves forward.
The discovery has left family members mourning the loss of two loved ones whose disappearance initially appeared to be linked to an ordinary purchase but ultimately became part of a much larger criminal investigation.
Authorities have not announced whether additional arrests are expected.
