Genesee County, Michigan — A Michigan couple is facing multiple felony charges after prosecutors alleged their 7-year-old son died following years of severe neglect that included inadequate nutrition, lack of medical care, and unsafe living conditions.
Damien O’Brien and Jessica O’Brien have been charged with second-degree murder, torture, and second-degree child abuse following the death of their son, Casper O’Brien, whose case has stunned investigators and prosecutors.
Officials say the child’s death followed a dramatic increase in weight and a pattern of alleged neglect that lasted for years.
Prosecutors Allege Child Was Fed an Unhealthy Diet
According to Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton, investigators believe Casper regularly consumed unhealthy snack foods rather than receiving proper nutrition.
The prosecutor said the child was being fed “a steady diet of snack foods” leading up to his death.
“Clearly the parents were feeding the child improperly, to say the least,” Leyton said.
“He wasn’t getting the nutrition he needed.”
Authorities said Casper weighed 255 pounds when he died in November 2025.
Medical records cited by investigators indicate he weighed 104 pounds during a doctor’s visit in February 2024, meaning he gained approximately 151 pounds over about 21 months.
Investigation Revealed Additional Signs of Neglect
According to prosecutors, Casper’s weight was only one of several serious concerns uncovered during the investigation.
Authorities allege the 7-year-old was nonverbal, bedridden, and suffered from bed sores and various skin rashes. Investigators also claim the family failed to obtain necessary medical treatment despite having health insurance.
Officials further allege that Casper was not enrolled in school.
The investigation also found the family’s home was reportedly filled with trash, according to information referenced in the autopsy report and statements from law enforcement and Child Protective Services.
Prosecutor Leyton described the case as one unlike any he has encountered during his career.
“It’s a very, very sad and tragic situation,” Leyton said. “I’ve been the prosecuting attorney for 22 years and I thought I’d seen it all but I’ve never seen anything quite like this.”
Medical Examiner Identified Cause of Death
According to the Genesee County Medical Examiner, Casper died on Nov. 4, 2025.
His cause of death was listed as dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition that weakens the heart muscle and reduces its ability to pump blood effectively.
The medical examiner’s report also concluded that the child’s weight was a contributing factor in his death. Investigators say the findings became a key part of the criminal case against the parents.
Parents Face Serious Criminal Charges
Following the investigation, prosecutors charged both Damien and Jessica O’Brien with multiple felony offenses.
The charges include:
- Second-degree murder
- Torture
- Second-degree child abuse
If convicted, the couple could face lengthy prison sentences. An attorney representing Damien O’Brien declined to discuss the allegations in detail, saying only:
“He is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.”
The criminal case remains pending, and prosecutors will continue presenting evidence as the legal proceedings move forward.
The allegations have sparked renewed discussion about child welfare, mandatory reporting, and the importance of ensuring children receive proper medical care and nutrition.
