Car Thief Steals Vehicle With Baby Inside, Then Leaves 1-Year-Old on Philadelphia Sidewalk

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — A terrifying night for one Philadelphia family ended with a 1-year-old boy being found safe after an alleged car thief drove away in his mother’s vehicle while the child was still inside.

The incident happened shortly after 11 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, in the East Falls neighborhood, according to reports.

The child’s mother was reportedly preparing to leave her grandparents’ home in the 3400 block of Henry Avenue when she briefly stepped away from her vehicle.

When the family realized the car was gone, they immediately feared the worst.

Uncle Describes Frantic Search for Baby

The baby’s uncle described the terrifying moment in an interview with 6 ABC.

“I came outside and the car was just gone with the baby.”

He said the family immediately began searching the surrounding neighborhood.

“We started panicking. We started knocking on doors. I started running around the block.”

While relatives searched nearby homes and streets, the child’s mother contacted authorities and used a tracking device to locate the stolen vehicle.

The tracking information provided investigators with a possible location, giving the family hope that they could quickly find both the vehicle and the missing child.

Stolen Car Tracked to West Philadelphia

The vehicle was reportedly tracked approximately five miles away to the 4000 block of Parkside in West Philadelphia. Police went to the location, but when officers arrived, neither the suspected car thief nor the baby was inside the vehicle.

Investigators then returned to the grandparents’ home to gather additional information and continue piecing together what had happened.

The family was still desperately searching for the child when a major breakthrough came.

Grandparents Find Baby on Sidewalk

Not long afterward, the child’s grandparents discovered him sitting safely in his car seat on a sidewalk about a block away from their home.

The entire ordeal reportedly lasted approximately one hour.

The discovery brought an enormous sense of relief to the family, who had spent the previous hour fearing that the child could have been seriously harmed.

Authorities believe the person who stole the vehicle may not have realized that a baby was inside when they drove away. According to the family, the 1-year-old was not physically injured during the incident.

Police Continue Search for Suspect

Although the child was safely reunited with his family, the investigation remains active. Police have not yet identified a suspect in connection with the alleged vehicle theft and abandonment of the child.

The circumstances surrounding the child’s abandonment remain unclear, including exactly when and where he was removed from the stolen vehicle.

Family Relieved Baby Was Not Hurt

For the family, the most important outcome was that the young child was found alive and apparently unharmed after a frightening disappearance.

The incident nevertheless highlights how quickly an ordinary moment can turn into an emergency, particularly when a child is left inside a vehicle.

Police are continuing to investigate the case and are asking anyone with information about the theft or the person responsible to come forward.
