Miami Beach, Florida — A California man is facing multiple criminal charges after police say he falsely claimed to be an FBI agent while causing a disturbance inside a popular Miami Beach nightclub early Wednesday morning.
According to the Miami Beach Police Department, 61-year-old Nelson Mauricio Aviles of Fontana, California, was arrested shortly after 1:30 a.m. following an incident at Twist nightclub on Washington Avenue.
Authorities said officers were initially called to the business after Aviles reported that security personnel had threatened him with a knife.
Police Say Man Appeared Highly Intoxicated
When officers arrived at the nightclub, they found Aviles displaying signs of heavy intoxication, according to the arrest report. Police said he had slurred speech, difficulty maintaining his balance, excessive sweating, and a strong odor of alcohol.
During the investigation, officers said Aviles repeatedly identified himself as an FBI agent.
According to police, he presented an identification card issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services, identifying him as a staff development specialist.
Investigators said the identification contained no indication of any affiliation with the FBI.
Despite that, officers allege Aviles continued insisting that he worked for the federal agency.
Nightclub Manager Describes Ongoing Disturbance
According to the arrest report, the nightclub’s manager told officers that Aviles had been causing problems inside the business before police arrived.
The manager alleged that Aviles repeatedly claimed to be an FBI agent while yelling at employees and patrons.
Police said the manager also reported that Aviles attempted to engage in both verbal and physical confrontations with others inside the nightclub.
Eventually, security personnel escorted him out of the establishment before officers arrived. Authorities also said Aviles claimed he planned to contact an FBI partner and launch an internal investigation into the nightclub.
However, police stated that he was unable to produce any official FBI credentials or documentation supporting those claims.
Officers Say He Resisted Arrest
While officers continued investigating the incident, police said Aviles repeatedly interrupted them and demanded either the return of his identification card or that he be arrested.
When officers attempted to take him into custody, investigators allege he pulled away, flailed his arms, and refused commands to place his hands behind his back.
Police said officers were ultimately able to handcuff him without further incident. No injuries were reported during the arrest.
Charges Filed and Court Appearance
According to jail records, Aviles has been charged with:
- Falsely impersonating an officer
- Disorderly conduct
- Resisting an officer without violence
He appeared before a Miami-Dade judge later Wednesday.
Court records show the judge found probable cause for the charges and ordered Aviles released on his own recognizance. Although the combined bond amount associated with the charges totaled $3,150, he was released without posting bond.
As part of the court’s conditions, Aviles was also ordered to stay away from Twist nightclub while the criminal case proceeds. The allegations against Aviles remain accusations, and the charges will be addressed through the court process.
