Fort Benning, Georgia — A federal indictment has charged an active-duty U.S. Army soldier and his wife with murder by child abuse after prosecutors alleged they intentionally deprived their young son of food, leading to his death. Investigators also claim the couple neglected multiple family pets, including one dog that allegedly died from starvation.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Georgia, Ladarrion McCray, 23, and Emma Bradshaw, 22, were arrested and charged in connection with the death of their son, who died on January 28 while the family was living at Fort Benning.
Federal prosecutors allege the child’s death was the result of prolonged neglect rather than an unexpected medical emergency.
Prosecutors Say Child Was Deprived of Food Before His Death
According to the federal indictment, McCray and Bradshaw allegedly willfully deprived their son of food between January 14 and January 28, placing his health and life at serious risk.
Investigators allege the couple recognized signs that the child was suffering from malnourishment, yet failed to provide appropriate care.
The indictment does not publicly disclose the child’s age or additional medical details surrounding his death. Prosecutors also allege the couple later made false statements to authorities investigating what happened to the child.
At this stage, those allegations have not been tested in court.
Investigation Led to Disturbing Discovery Inside Home
While investigating the child’s death, authorities searched the couple’s residence on the military installation. According to prosecutors, investigators found two living dogs showing signs of severe malnourishment and significant muscle wasting.
Authorities also allegedly discovered a deceased dachshund that had been discarded in the garbage.
Federal prosecutors said McCray told investigators the dog had died from illness and had been buried at an off-post park.
However, according to the indictment, a veterinary necropsy later determined the dog died of starvation. The findings led investigators to file additional criminal charges involving alleged animal abuse.
Couple Faces Multiple Federal Charges
McCray and Bradshaw have each been charged with murder by child abuse, cruelty to children, making false statements, aggravated animal cruelty, animal crushing, and multiple counts of animal cruelty.
Federal authorities have not released additional details regarding the evidence supporting each charge, and the allegations remain subject to court proceedings.
If convicted, the defendants could face significant federal penalties.

Soldier Also Faces Military Proceedings
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said McCray was serving as an active-duty U.S. Army soldier after transferring to Fort Benning before Bradshaw later joined him while pregnant with their child.
In addition to the criminal prosecution, prosecutors stated McCray is subject to military discharge proceedings as a result of the allegations.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not announced whether additional charges or information may be released as the case moves through the federal court system.
The allegations described in the indictment represent the government’s claims. Both defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
