Honolulu, Hawaii — A routine lunch turned into a frightening emergency Tuesday when part of the roof at a Honolulu restaurant suddenly collapsed, injuring four elderly women and sending one of them to the hospital.
The incident happened on Aug. 18 at Happy Days Chinese Seafood Restaurant, where roughly 40 people were inside when a large section of the roof gave way. Fortunately, diners had some warning as the structure gradually began to cave in, allowing many people to move away from the collapsing area.
Large Section of Roof Collapses Inside Restaurant
The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) said firefighters responded to the restaurant shortly after 1 p.m. following reports that the roof had collapsed.
When first responders arrived, they discovered that an approximately 40-by-40-foot section of the roof had fallen into the restaurant.
About 40 people were inside at the time. Capt. Jacob Pekelo said the gradual nature of the collapse gave many customers enough time to get out of the way before the roof came down.
That timing may have helped prevent what could have been an even more serious incident involving dozens of diners.
Four Elderly Women Suffer Injuries
The Honolulu Emergency Medical Services confirmed that four women in their late 60s and 70s were injured during the collapse. Paramedics evaluated three of the women at the scene. All three declined transportation to a hospital.
The fourth victim, a 77-year-old woman, suffered minor lacerations and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities did not report any other serious injuries among the people inside the restaurant.
Emergency Crews Worked to Stabilize Remaining Roof
After the collapse, emergency crews had to contend with the possibility that additional parts of the structure could become unstable.
HFD’s hazardous materials unit conducted air monitoring to make sure there were no gas leaks following the incident. The department also dispatched its Special Operations trailer to assist with the response.
According to HFD, rescue personnel used specialized equipment to stabilize the remaining portion of the roof, mitigate hazards and make sure the area was left safe.

The response continued as crews worked to secure the damaged structure and prevent further danger to anyone nearby.
Nearby Units Evacuated as Investigation Begins
The danger was not limited to the restaurant itself.
Nearby units were also evacuated, while several roads surrounding the restaurant were temporarily closed as emergency crews responded to the collapse.
The Honolulu Police Department is now investigating the incident. Authorities have not yet publicly identified what caused the roof to fail or whether structural problems played a role.
For the diners who were inside, however, what began as an ordinary afternoon meal quickly became a terrifying experience.
The fact that the roof reportedly collapsed gradually allowed many people to move away from the danger zone, potentially reducing the number and severity of injuries. Still, four elderly women were hurt, and one required hospital treatment.
The investigation is expected to determine how the roof failed and whether any additional safety concerns exist at the property.
