CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Princeton Community Middle School community in Cincinnati, Ohio, is mourning an extraordinary loss after two beloved educators died just one day apart, leaving students, families, and colleagues grieving the sudden tragedies.
The deaths of STEM teacher Carlee Bongiorno on July 15 and paraprofessional and coach Justin Randle on July 16 prompted an outpouring of tributes from school officials, students, parents, and community members who remembered both educators for the lasting difference they made in countless lives.
Princeton Community Middle School mourns two respected educators
Princeton City Schools Superintendent Mari Phillips confirmed the heartbreaking news in separate statements honoring both staff members.
Carlee Bongiorno, who spent 19 years working in education, taught STEM classes at Princeton Community Middle School and became known for creating meaningful relationships with students while inspiring a love of learning.
In its tribute, the district said she would be remembered for “the relationships she built and her passion for music and making the world a kinder place.”
According to her obituary, Bongiorno is survived by her husband, Robert Bongiorno, and her children, Arianna Bongiorno and Austin Consagra.
She also worked with Great Oaks, where colleagues described her as someone whose influence extended far beyond the classroom.
The organization said she would be “greatly missed” by Great Oaks, the Princeton community, and the many students whose lives she touched.
Justin Randle remembered for compassion and mentorship
Just one day later, the school community was struck by another devastating loss when Justin Randle, a paraprofessional and coach at the middle school, died on July 16.
School leaders described Randle as someone whose influence reached well beyond academics.
According to the district, his compassion, encouragement, and trusted mentorship helped students feel seen, valued, and capable of achieving success in life.
The tribute also acknowledged the deep grief felt across the school, stating that staff, students, and everyone who knew him were mourning the loss of a cherished member of the Princeton community while encouraging people to remember the inspiration he leaves behind.
Community shares heartfelt tributes and memories
Following the announcements, social media filled with emotional messages from parents, former students, and community members reflecting on the impact both educators had.
One person remembered Bongiorno as someone whose love and devotion to her students were unmatched, adding that students naturally gravitated toward her classroom because learning there was engaging and welcoming.
Another parent shared that their daughter had hugged Bongiorno on the last day of eighth grade, recalling how the teacher had helped her through difficult moments.
Randle was also remembered with tremendous affection.
One community member described him as a “child whisperer,” saying he had an incredible ability to connect with children who needed extra care, patience, and encouragement.
Another tribute praised him as the kind of mentor every parent would want in a child’s life, highlighting the perseverance and guidance he demonstrated every day.
Counseling support and fundraiser launched
In response to the back-to-back losses, Talbert House and MindPeace provided counselors for three days to help students and staff cope with the grief.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign was created to support Bongiorno’s family. In the fundraiser, her husband, Robert Bongiorno, wrote that the family was “heartbroken” by her passing.
He remembered his wife as someone who touched countless lives through her teaching, music, kindness, encouragement, and unwavering faith, saying she brought joy not only to her students but also to everyone fortunate enough to know her.
The Princeton community continues to honor both educators, whose dedication and compassion left a lasting legacy that will be remembered for years to come.
