Fullerton, California — A California family searching for a missing grandmother received heartbreaking news after 61-year-old Theresa Jones was found dead inside her own vehicle outside a church days after she disappeared.
Prosecutors now allege that her 23-year-old son, Emmanuel Wesley, fatally shot her before abandoning her vehicle, leading to murder charges in a case that has shocked the local community.
Grandmother Reported Missing After Missing Family Commitment
According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, Theresa Jones was reported missing on July 7 after family members became concerned when she failed to pick up her grandchild, something prosecutors say was highly unusual.
Relatives also said repeated phone calls to Jones went unanswered, prompting growing concern for her safety.
Four days later, on July 11, authorities discovered Jones’ body inside the passenger seat of her car in the parking lot of a church in Fullerton, California.
The discovery immediately launched a homicide investigation.
Prosecutors Say Shooting Happened Outside Police Department
Investigators allege the killing actually occurred one week earlier on July 4, outside the Fullerton Police Department.
According to prosecutors, surveillance footage captured Jones driving her vehicle to the police station that afternoon.
Authorities allege the video then shows Jones slumped over behind the steering wheel before a man identified as Emmanuel Wesley exited the vehicle.
Police say Wesley then moved his mother’s body from the driver’s seat into the passenger seat before driving away in her vehicle.
Investigators later determined that Theresa Jones had suffered two gunshot wounds to her back.
Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive for the alleged killing.

Son Faces Murder and Firearm Charges
Emmanuel Wesley, 23, has been charged with one felony count of murder, along with a firearm enhancement alleging the discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury or death, according to prosecutors.
He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. If convicted, Wesley could face significant prison time under California law.
The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors continue preparing their case.
