Abington, Massachusetts — A police pursuit involving a stolen Hyundai Santa Fe ended in tragedy early Wednesday morning after the vehicle ran a red light, veered off the road, and slammed into a tree, killing a 17-year-old driver and leaving four other teenagers with life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
The crash occurred in Abington, about 21 miles south of Boston, and remains under investigation by state and local officials.
Police Pursuit Ends in Deadly Crash
According to the Abington Police Department, officers attempted to stop a Hyundai Santa Fe that had been reported stolen after spotting it on Walnut Street.
Police said the driver failed to pull over, prompting a pursuit that lasted only a few minutes.
Surveillance footage later reviewed by investigators reportedly showed the SUV running a red light before leaving the roadway and crashing directly into a tree.
The impact was catastrophic. Authorities said the 17-year-old driver became trapped inside the wreckage and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Four Teenage Passengers Seriously Injured
The SUV was carrying five teenagers ranging in age from 14 to 17 at the time of the crash. Police said one female passenger was ejected from the vehicle during the collision.
The remaining three passengers — one boy and two girls — suffered life-threatening injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals before later being transferred to medical facilities in Boston for specialized treatment.
Officials have not released the identities of any of the teenagers involved.
Police Clarify Driver Was in Possession of Stolen Vehicle
During a media briefing, Abington Police Chief John Bonney emphasized that investigators have not determined whether the deceased teenager actually stole the SUV.
He explained that officers initiated the pursuit because the driver was operating a vehicle that had been reported stolen.
According to Bonney, investigators are still working to determine exactly how the teenager came into possession of the vehicle before the crash.
The Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office has since taken over the investigation into the incident.
Witnesses Describe Chaotic Scene
Residents living near the crash site described waking to a violent impact followed by a massive emergency response. Neighbor Melissa Clark said she first heard what sounded like a loud explosion, which she later realized was the vehicle striking the tree.
She recalled seeing a girl who had been thrown from the SUV lying on a nearby lawn while emergency crews rushed to help the victims.
Clark said the scene was heartbreaking.
She described hearing multiple ambulances, police cruisers, and fire trucks arriving within moments and called the crash “horrific.”
As a parent, she said the tragedy was especially difficult to witness, noting that it happened on what seemed like an ordinary weekday morning.
Another nearby resident, Mindy Redman, said she heard the vehicle traveling at excessive speed moments before the crash. She recalled hearing a tremendous impact and said police officers were already directly behind the SUV when it struck the tree.
Another witness similarly reported hearing a loud thump followed immediately by emergency sirens, saying officers were on the scene almost instantly.
Officer Placed on Leave Following Pursuit
Chief Bonney confirmed that the officer involved in the pursuit has been placed on administrative leave, a standard step taken following serious incidents.
He said the officer, who has served with the department for less than two years, is receiving support as he copes with the emotional impact of the fatal crash.
Bonney described the officer as a kind and caring person, adding that the incident has been extremely difficult on a personal level.
Meanwhile, investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and the deadly collision.
