Springfield Township, Michigan — A Virginia man is facing multiple felony charges after prosecutors alleged he caused a devastating drunk driving crash that claimed the lives of an entire family of four in Oakland County earlier this month.
According to prosecutors, 27-year-old Charles Dean Pace of Glen Allen, Virginia, was formally charged following the July 1 crash on Interstate 75 near East Holly Road in Springfield Township.
Authorities allege Pace was driving under the influence of alcohol and at excessive speeds when the deadly collision occurred.
Prosecutors Allege Driver Was Speeding While Intoxicated
According to Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald, investigators believe Pace was behind the wheel of a Ford F-250 pickup truck that was traveling south on Interstate 75.
The prosecution alleges the truck was weaving in and out of traffic while exceeding 90 miles per hour shortly before the crash.
Investigators also determined that Pace’s blood alcohol concentration was more than three times Michigan’s legal limit, according to prosecutors.
Following his arrest on July 3, Pace was booked into the Oakland County Jail. He was arraigned on July 7, where he was charged with four counts of second-degree murder and four counts of operating while intoxicated causing death.
The court denied bond, and he remains in custody as the criminal case moves forward.
Family of Four Identified as Victims
Authorities identified the victims as Zakeria Sharon Dodson, 23, Tieree Powell, 24, their 3-year-old daughter Nalani Powell, and their 2-year-old son Karter Powell.
The deaths have deeply affected family members and the local community, with loved ones mourning the loss of two young parents and their children.
In announcing the charges, Prosecutor Karen McDonald stressed that the deaths were preventable.
“Zakeria, Tieree, Nalani and Karter did not die in an accident,” McDonald said. “They were murdered because of this defendant’s alleged choices – to drive drunk, to drive fast and to drive recklessly – that created an obvious and unnecessary danger.”

Community Rallies Around Victims’ Family
Following the tragedy, loved ones launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses and support surviving family members.
The fundraiser describes Tieree Powell as “a devoted father whose greatest joy was spending time with his children,” while remembering Zakeria Dodson as “a loving and nurturing mother who devoted her life to raising her beautiful children with compassion, strength, and unconditional love.”
As of publication, the fundraiser had collected nearly $54,000 toward its $100,000 goal, reflecting widespread community support for the grieving family.
Case Moves Forward
Pace remains in the Oakland County Jail while awaiting the next stage of court proceedings.
The charges against him are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. If convicted, he could face significant prison time given the seriousness of the charges stemming from the fatal crash.
The case has renewed attention on the dangers of impaired driving and the devastating consequences prosecutors say can result from reckless decisions behind the wheel.
