McHenry County, Illinois — Family members are remembering a 48-year-old U.S. Marine veteran as a woman who devoted her life to helping others after she was killed in a devastating boating collision on the Fox River over the weekend.
Authorities say the fatal crash has now led to criminal charges against the operator of another boat, while loved ones continue honoring the victim’s legacy of service and compassion.
Marine Veteran Identified After Deadly Fox River Collision
The victim has been identified as Magdalena Jablonska, a U.S. Marine veteran who was killed during a boating collision on Saturday, July 25, according to local authorities.
Investigators allege that Richard Stevenson, 45, was operating a pontoon boat at a high rate of speed when it struck and traveled over another boat at approximately 2:30 p.m.
Emergency responders pronounced Jablonska dead at the scene. Authorities said her fiancé and the couple’s dog were also injured during the collision.
Stevenson was arrested and now faces two counts of aggravated driving under the influence causing death and one count of reckless homicide. He remains in custody as the criminal case moves forward.
Autopsy Findings Released as Investigation Continues
The McHenry County Coroner’s Office performed an autopsy several days after the incident. Officials determined that Jablonska died from blunt force injuries to her head and body.
Authorities noted that the official cause and manner of death remain under investigation, even as prosecutors continue pursuing criminal charges related to the crash.

Originally from Poland, Jablonska later moved to the Chicago area before joining the United States Marine Corps after high school.
Her sister, Michelle Macias, described her as someone who would “go above and beyond for anyone” and called her “the most selfless and kind person you would ever meet.”
Family members said helping others came naturally to her throughout her life.
Her brother, Marcin Jablonski, wrote that “as a U.S. Marine, it was natural that Magdalena was always helping someone in need.”
He also described his sister as “the sunshine in every place she went,” adding that one of her greatest passions was caring for dogs and supporting animal shelters.

In an emotional tribute shared online, he wrote that he always believed they would grow old together and thanked her for the countless ways she helped others throughout her life.

According to relatives, Jablonska deeply loved dogs and regularly supported organizations that rescued abandoned animals.
To honor her memory, the family has created a GoFundMe campaign benefiting local dog shelters, saying they want her lifelong compassion for animals to continue making a difference even after her death.
Loved ones hope the fundraiser reflects the generosity and kindness that defined her life.
Sheriff Calls Crash Preventable
Following the tragedy, Lake County Sheriff John D. Idleburg expressed frustration over what he described as a preventable incident.
In a public statement, the sheriff said he was “frustrated and saddened” by the reckless, dangerous, inexcusable, and preventable actions that resulted in one death and left another person critically injured.
He also extended condolences to the victim’s family and wished the injured survivor a full recovery as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
