Austin, Texas — A police response to reports of an armed teenager ended in tragedy early Friday morning after a 17-year-old boy was fatally shot by officers, who later discovered that the object in his waistband was a water bottle rather than a gun. The incident is now under multiple investigations as authorities work to determine exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting.
Officers Responded to Report of an Armed Person Near Park
According to the Austin Police Department (APD), officers were dispatched to the 10100 block of Baden Lane at approximately 3:51 a.m. on Friday, July 24, after a 911 caller reported seeing someone who appeared to be carrying a handgun.
Audio released by the department captured the caller expressing uncertainty while describing the situation.
The caller reportedly said, “There seems to be a kid, and it looks like he has a gun. I’m not sure, but he keeps on messing with his waistband. I see something in his hands, it looked like a firearm, but I’m not sure.”
Police said officers located an individual matching the description near the park shortly after arriving.
Body Camera Footage Captures Fatal Encounter
According to APD, officers attempted to de-escalate the situation by repeatedly instructing the teen to keep his hands visible.
During a Friday news conference, Police Chief Lisa Davis said the teenager “very quickly, very suddenly” lifted his sweatshirt with one hand while reaching toward his waistband with the other.
Body-camera footage released by the department shows the movement, and at approximately 4:02 a.m., three officers opened fire, striking the teenager.
The 17-year-old Black male was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:25 a.m., police said.
Investigation Finds Water Bottle Instead of Gun
As investigators processed the scene, authorities determined that the object tucked into the teen’s waistband was a water bottle, not a firearm.
Police also made another unexpected discovery.
According to Chief Davis, investigators later determined that the 911 call reporting the armed individual had been placed from the teenager’s own cellphone.
Based on the evidence collected so far, investigators believe the incident was potentially a case of “suicide by police,” though the investigation remains ongoing and officials have not announced any final conclusions.
Police Chief Expresses Sympathy as Investigation Continues
Addressing the shooting, Chief Davis acknowledged the difficult decisions officers sometimes face during rapidly unfolding emergencies.
She said, “Officers are often required to make life or death decisions in seconds. This was a rapidly evolving incident. Our commitment now is to examine the facts, the evidence, the officer’s actions, and the applicable law.”
The police chief also expressed condolences to the teenager’s family.
“A young man lost his life,” Davis said. “I cannot imagine the pain and the grief that his family is going through, and I want them to know that I am thinking about them. And I am very sorry about this incident.”
Officers Placed on Leave Pending Multiple Reviews
The three officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave, in accordance with department policy following an officer-involved shooting.
The Austin Police Department confirmed that both a criminal investigation and an internal administrative investigation are underway.
Authorities have not released the teenager’s identity, stating that his name will be withheld until the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office completes a positive identification and the appropriate notifications have been made.
