Lincoln, Nebraska — What began as a heartbreaking loss in 2021 has turned into an incredible reunion for one Nebraska family after their beloved dog, Chong, was found more than 600 miles from home and returned to the people who never stopped searching for him.
For five long years, Inmaculada Jackman refused to believe her dog was gone forever. Even after moving on with daily life, she continued visiting her old neighborhood, hoping that one day Chong would somehow reappear. That hope finally became reality after an unexpected social media post changed everything.
Family Never Stopped Searching for Chong
Jackman said she was devastated when Chong escaped from the family’s home in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 2021. Although months turned into years without any sign of him, she and her family continued searching whenever they could.
“We still looked for him,” Jackman said. “We still went to our old neighborhood and drove around and looked to see if we could see anyone walking him or if he was running around somewhere.”
Despite the passing years, the family never completely gave up on the possibility that Chong might still be alive.
Social Media Post Leads to an Incredible Discovery
The breakthrough came when a friend spotted a social media post about a dog that had been found behind a truck stop in Indiana, approximately 642 miles from Lincoln.
The family quickly realized the dog matched Chong and immediately contacted the Hendricks County Animal Shelter to claim him.
However, there was one unexpected obstacle.
Shelter staff explained that someone had microchipped Chong during the years he was missing, meaning they first had to contact the individual listed on the chip before releasing the dog.
A Waiting Period Before the Happy Ending
Jackman recalled that shelter employees were sympathetic to her situation.
According to her, staff told her they had reached out to the person connected to the newer microchip and would have to wait three days for a response before making any decision.
“They told me that they were all hoping and praying that the other people did not contact them,” Jackman said.
When the grace period expired without anyone claiming Chong, the shelter was finally able to reunite him with his original family.
Emotional Reunion Captured on Camera
The reunion was filled with emotion after five years apart.
Video shared by the shelter showed Chong appearing confused at first as he recognized Jackman after such a long separation. Moments later, the dog relaxed into her arms, cuddled close, and barked excitedly as if realizing he was finally back where he belonged.
The reunion also introduced Chong to Che Che, the family’s newer dog, who had joined the household after Chong disappeared.
The touching footage quickly resonated with animal lovers, highlighting the remarkable bond between pets and their owners, even after years apart.
A Message of Hope for Pet Owners Everywhere
Looking back on the experience, Jackman hopes Chong’s story encourages other families who are still searching for missing pets.
Her advice is simple: don’t stop believing.
“Never lose hope,” she said. “It’s been five years and we found him.“
For countless families still wondering whether they’ll ever see a lost pet again, Chong’s remarkable journey serves as a powerful reminder that unexpected reunions can happen, even after years of uncertainty and hundreds of miles apart.
