San Francisco, California — After years of anticipation and repeated delays, fans of Jollibee finally have an opening date to mark on their calendars. The beloved Filipino fast-food chain is set to open its first downtown San Francisco location on July 31, ending a wait that stretched nearly six years.
The highly anticipated restaurant has become one of the city’s most talked-about retail openings, with loyal customers eagerly tracking construction progress and hoping each year would finally bring opening day.
Long-Awaited Downtown Location Finally Ready
Jollibee’s newest restaurant is located in the former Payless ShoeSource space near Powell Street BART Station and Hallidie Plaza, one of San Francisco’s busiest downtown corridors.
The restaurant will welcome guests daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., offering dine-in, takeout and online ordering.
Customers can expect the chain’s most popular menu items, including its famous Chickenjoy fried chicken, Filipino-style sweet spaghetti, peach-mango pies, burgers and other signature favorites that have helped build a devoted customer following around the world.
Why the Opening Took Nearly Six Years
The restaurant was originally expected to open much earlier.
Plans initially pointed toward a 2023 opening, but the launch was later pushed back to 2024, then 2025, before finally receiving approval for 2026.
According to reports, much of the delay stemmed from navigating San Francisco’s permitting and approval process.
The project required historic preservation reviews, utility installation approvals and coordination with multiple city agencies because of the restaurant’s location near major public transportation facilities.
Earlier this year, another obstacle emerged when testing found that rooftop mechanical equipment exceeded the city’s permitted daytime and nighttime noise limits.
To resolve the issue, Jollibee installed vibration isolation pads, allowing the restaurant to receive final approval from city departments this month.
Fans Closely Followed Every Construction Update
Throughout the lengthy construction process, loyal customers regularly speculated about when the restaurant would finally open.
Interest grew even stronger after protective boards covering the storefront windows were recently removed, fueling excitement that opening day was finally approaching.

Jollibee recently announced plans to significantly expand its presence across the region, with a franchise partner expected to open 15 new Northern California restaurants over the next eight years.
The brand currently operates more than 1,600 restaurants worldwide, including over 80 locations across the United States, and continues to grow as demand for its menu expands.
