Pompano Beach, Florida — A deadly crash shut down part of U.S. 1 in Pompano Beach on Tuesday after a vehicle left the roadway and struck a pedestrian at a bus stop, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. in the 1000 block of U.S. 1, where deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue crews responded to reports of a serious crash.

Authorities said one person was killed at the scene, while the driver was hospitalized with injuries.

Vehicle Reportedly Left Roadway Before Hitting Bus Stop

According to a preliminary investigation by the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the driver struck a pedestrian who was on the sidewalk.

The pedestrian, whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told Local 10 News that the vehicle appeared to lose control before crashing into a bus stop bench where the victim had reportedly been sitting moments earlier.

The impact was so severe that the bench was destroyed, and the victim’s body was later covered with a yellow tarp as investigators worked at the scene.

Witnesses Describe Chaotic Moments After Crash

People in the area said emergency crews quickly flooded the scene and closed off a large section of the roadway.

One witness, Bill McKain, described the sudden police response after the crash.

“All of a sudden cops flew in, roped off the road and made me turn around and drive five miles the other way,” witness Bill McKain said. “I don’t know how fast you can really get on this road with stop lights in between.”

Authorities have not said what caused the driver to lose control, and investigators continue working to determine the circumstances leading up to the collision.

Driver Hospitalized, Nearby Property Also Damaged

Officials confirmed that the driver involved in the crash was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries. The extent of those injuries has not been released.

Investigators also said the crash caused damage beyond the bus stop.

The vehicle struck several cars at a nearby dealership before coming to a stop, leaving debris scattered across the roadway. The damaged bus bench remained in the street while crews processed the scene.

McKain also shared his sympathy for the victim’s loved ones.

“My heart goes out to them and their family,” McKain said. “I couldn’t even image being there and having something like that happen.”
