Trader Joe’s Reportedly Set to Open Third Philadelphia Store at Long-Vacant Waterfront Property

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — Trader Joe’s could soon expand its footprint in Philadelphia, with reports indicating that the popular grocery chain has signed a lease for a new location in Pennsport, South Philadelphia.

If the project moves forward as reported, the new store would mark Trader Joe’s third location in Philadelphia, giving shoppers in South Philadelphia easier access to one of the country’s most popular specialty grocery retailers.

New Store Planned Along Delaware River Waterfront

According to reports, the proposed Trader Joe’s will be built on a 4-acre development site along Columbus Boulevard, between Dickinson Street and Tasker Street, near the Delaware River waterfront.

The location has been the focus of redevelopment discussions for years and is expected to become part of a new shopping center serving the growing Pennsport neighborhood.

The addition of Trader Joe’s could bring a major retail anchor to the area while attracting additional businesses to the surrounding development.

Although the project has been widely reported, the grocery chain has not officially announced an opening date or construction timeline.

Property Recently Changed Hands

Property records show that Ocean Block Capital, a New York-based real estate investment firm, recently purchased the site for $7.5 million.

The property was acquired from Philadelphia developer Bart Blatstein, who had previously planned to develop the parcel as a retail destination.

One of the earlier proposals included building a Super Wawa, but that project never moved forward, leaving the site available for a different commercial development.

The reported Trader Joe’s lease now signals a new direction for the long-vacant waterfront property.

Third Philadelphia Location for Trader Joe’s

If completed, the Pennsport store would join Trader Joe’s two existing Philadelphia locations.

The grocery chain currently operates stores at 1324 Arch Street, near the Pennsylvania Convention Center, and 2121 Market Street in the city’s central business district.

A South Philadelphia location would expand the company’s reach to another part of the city while providing residents with a more convenient shopping option.

Trader Joe’s has built a loyal customer following thanks to its private-label products, specialty grocery items, frozen foods, snacks, and seasonal selections.

Trader Joe’s Continues National Growth

Founded in 1967 by Joe Coulombe in Pasadena, California, Trader Joe’s has grown from a single neighborhood grocery store into one of the nation’s most recognizable supermarket chains.

Today, the company operates more than 650 stores across the United States and continues expanding into new communities where customer demand remains strong.

While shoppers in South Philadelphia may have to wait for official confirmation and construction updates, reports of the new Pennsport location have already generated excitement among residents eager for another Trader Joe’s store in the city.
