Baton Rouge, Louisiana — A Louisiana mother has been arrested after authorities say her 14-month-old son was rushed to the hospital with an extremely dangerous level of alcohol in his system, leaving doctors to warn that the child could have suffered permanent brain damage or died without immediate medical intervention.
According to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office, Genesis Harrell, 27, is charged with one count of cruelty to juveniles following an investigation into the May incident at an apartment complex on Longridge Avenue in Baton Rouge.
Investigators say the case began after Harrell called 911 to report that her toddler was behaving abnormally.
Child Rushed to Hospital After Suddenly Becoming Unresponsive
According to investigators, Harrell told emergency responders that her son appeared unusually lethargic and went limp when she tried to pick him up after waking from a nap.
She reportedly said the child had eaten breakfast earlier that day before falling asleep in the afternoon. When his condition failed to improve, she contacted emergency services.
The boy was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital, where doctors discovered his blood alcohol content (BAC) was approximately 0.305%.
For comparison, Louisiana’s legal blood alcohol limit for drivers is 0.08%, meaning the toddler’s BAC was nearly four times the level at which an adult would be considered legally impaired.
Doctors Say Child Suffered Life-Threatening Alcohol Poisoning
Medical professionals diagnosed the 14-month-old with alcohol intoxication and said he experienced several serious medical complications.
According to investigators, the child suffered acute respiratory failure, hypoxia, and hypercapnia, a condition caused by excessive carbon dioxide in the bloodstream.
Doctors told authorities that without immediate treatment, the toddler could have experienced respiratory arrest, permanent brain injury, or death.
The child remains hospitalized in the pediatric intensive care unit, according to law enforcement.
Mother Could Not Explain How Child Consumed Alcohol
Investigators said Harrell told them alcohol was present inside the apartment but insisted it had been stored where the toddler could not access it.
She reportedly stated that she lived with her boyfriend, who was working from home that day. However, investigators noted that Harrell was the child’s sole legal guardian and responsible for supervising him.
Police said the mother could not explain how her son consumed enough alcohol to reach such a dangerously high blood alcohol level.
During a follow-up interview, investigators questioned Harrell about the alcohol, where it was kept, who last handled it, and the child’s activities before the medical emergency.
According to the arrest warrant, she later declined to answer additional questions.
Mother Held Without Bond as Investigation Continues
In the arrest documents, investigators wrote that Harrell demonstrated “such disregard for the victim’s interests and safety that her conduct constituted a gross deviation below the standard of care expected of a reasonably careful parent.”
Harrell is currently being held at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison without bond while the criminal case proceeds.
Meanwhile, authorities said the toddler has been placed in the custody of the Louisiana Department of Child and Family Services as he continues receiving medical care.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not released additional details about how the child gained access to the alcohol.
