Jerusalem Township, Ohio — A boating trip on Lake Erie has turned into a heartbreaking and ongoing investigation after an 11-year-old girl disappeared, one passenger was found dead, and the neighbor who was supervising the child was arrested days later.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, which unfolded on the western basin of Lake Erie near Jerusalem Township.
Girl Disappeared Shortly After Boat Left Marina
According to investigators, 11-year-old Angelique Cunningham left Meinke Marina on Wednesday evening with her 41-year-old neighbor, Kristen Gerrie, and 38-year-old Jonathan Ciha.
Officials said Cunningham vanished from the boat within approximately 15 minutes after the trio departed.
Emergency crews immediately launched a large-scale search involving multiple agencies, spending days searching the lake and surrounding shoreline in hopes of finding the missing girl.
Despite extensive efforts, officials announced Friday evening that they had exhausted available search resources.
The Toledo Fire and Rescue Department later confirmed that the operation had transitioned from a rescue mission to a recovery effort.
One Passenger Found Dead in Lake Erie
While the search for Cunningham continued, another tragic discovery was made. On Thursday morning, boaters spotted a body floating in the water and contacted emergency services.
Authorities later identified the victim as Jonathan Ciha, 38.
A deputy coroner determined that Ciha died from drowning, although officials said the circumstances and manner of his death remain under investigation.
Meanwhile, Gerrie managed to swim safely to shore and was later questioned by investigators about the events leading up to the disappearance and death.
The boat involved in the incident was recovered Thursday near West Sister Island.
Neighbor Arrested on Child Endangerment Charge
On Friday, authorities arrested Kristen Gerrie and charged her with child endangerment in connection with Cunningham’s disappearance.
Investigators said Gerrie had been responsible for supervising the 11-year-old during the boating trip. She is currently being held in custody on $50,000 bail, according to booking records.
Authorities have not publicly explained what happened aboard the boat or what sequence of events led to Cunningham’s disappearance and Ciha’s death.

Investigation Continues as Family Awaits Answers
The investigation took another emotional turn on Sunday after authorities recovered the body of a young girl near the Lake Erie shoreline.
However, officials have not yet confirmed the identity of the child, and formal identification remains pending.
In a statement, the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department expressed sympathy for those affected by the tragedy.
“Our thoughts remain with the family and everyone affected by this tragedy. We ask the public to continue giving emergency crews the space needed to conduct this difficult operation.”
As investigators continue reviewing evidence and interviewing witnesses, many questions remain unanswered about what occurred during the brief boating trip that ended in tragedy.
Authorities have indicated that the investigation is ongoing, and additional information is expected as the case develops.
