Austin, Texas — A Texas high school community is mourning the loss of a 17-year-old senior and student athlete who died days after suddenly collapsing during football practice.
Odin Hensley, a senior at Lake Travis High School, experienced a serious medical emergency during practice on the morning of Monday, August 10, according to school officials.
The incident prompted an emergency response involving first responders and Travis County STAR Flight, while the school canceled the rest of the day’s football activities.
Football Practice Halted After Medical Emergency
Lake Travis High School football coach Carter informed parents about the emergency in a Facebook post shortly after it happened. According to the coach, Hensley suffered a “serious health emergency” at approximately 8 a.m. during football activities.
The school immediately called for emergency assistance, and STAR Flight was involved in transporting the student for medical care.
Coach Carter said he was grateful to the school’s athletic training staff, coaches, Lake Travis ISD police and first responders who arrived within minutes. The coach also asked the school community to keep the student and his family in their thoughts and prayers.
According to Fox 7 Austin, Hensley was subsequently hospitalized in the intensive care unit at Dell Children’s Medical Center.
School District Announces Hensley’s Death
Three days after the medical emergency, the Lake Travis Independent School District announced that Hensley had died.
School officials said the teenager died from complications related to the medical emergency he experienced during football practice.
The district did not provide additional details about the specific medical condition that caused Hensley’s collapse. Superintendent Curtis Null remembered Hensley as a longtime member of the Lake Travis ISD community, noting that he had attended Lake Pointe Elementary School before eventually becoming a student at Lake Travis High School.
At the high school, Hensley was known as a committed athlete who participated in both football and wrestling.
Teachers and Coaches Remember Teen as a Valued Friend
Null said Hensley’s teachers and coaches remembered him as a “kind, determined young man” who was an important part of his school community.
He was described as a valued teammate, classmate and friend, with school officials saying his presence had touched many lives. The district said Hensley would be deeply missed by students, educators, coaches and others who knew him.
Counselors were also made available at the school’s counseling center to provide support to students, staff and families coping with the sudden loss.
School officials thanked the community for the support shown to Hensley’s family and the Lake Travis football program throughout his hospitalization.
Teammates Honor Hensley on Their Helmets
Hensley’s teammates had supported his family while he remained hospitalized. After learning of his death, the football team found another way to honor their teammate.
Players wore helmet stickers featuring Hensley’s name and jersey number, carrying his memory onto the field and showing their support for his family.
The tribute came as students, coaches and community members continued to grieve the loss of a teenager who had been preparing to complete his high school career.
Community Leaders Pay Tribute to Teen
Texas House member Vikki Goodwin also shared a public tribute to Hensley.
Goodwin said that although she did not know Hensley personally, she understood the significance of a community losing a child, teammate and classmate.
She highlighted the descriptions shared by his teachers, particularly that he was kind, determined and a good teammate and friend.
She also expressed her condolences to Hensley’s parents, siblings and everyone who had loved him throughout his life.
The Lake Travis community continues to mourn as Hensley’s family, teammates, classmates, teachers and coaches face the difficult days ahead.
