Tuscaloosa County, Alabama — Authorities in Alabama have arrested a 29-year-old woman after her 9-month-old son was found dead inside their home, a case that remains under investigation as officials await autopsy results.
The child’s death has prompted a criminal investigation involving multiple law enforcement units, with prosecutors indicating that additional charges may be possible depending on the findings of the medical examiner.
Mother Reportedly Returned Home to Find Infant Unresponsive
According to investigators, the incident came to light Tuesday afternoon when the child’s mother, Ja’Keisa Knox, contacted authorities after returning home and finding her baby unresponsive.
Deputies responded after receiving the emergency call at approximately 4 p.m.
The infant was transported to DCH Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. As investigators interviewed Knox, authorities said she told them she had left for work earlier that morning.
Investigators Say Baby Was Left Home Alone
According to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, Knox allegedly told deputies she left the apartment at approximately 8 a.m., leaving the infant alone inside the residence while she worked.
Investigators said she acknowledged being the child’s sole guardian and indicated that no other caregiver had been expected to check on or supervise the baby during that time.
Based on those statements, authorities believe the child was alone in the home for approximately eight hours before Knox returned.
Officials have not released additional details about the conditions inside the residence or what investigators discovered during their response.
Medical Findings Prompt Expanded Investigation
Authorities said medical personnel who examined the infant reported observing multiple injuries, as well as indications that the child appeared malnourished and underweight.
Those observations prompted hospital staff to notify investigators, leading the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Unit to join the investigation.
Officials have not publicly disclosed the nature of the reported injuries or whether they contributed to the child’s death. The child’s exact cause and manner of death will be determined through an autopsy conducted by the medical examiner.
Mother Charged as Investigation Continues
Following the investigation, Knox was arrested and charged with child abuse. She is currently being held at the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bond.

Authorities Await Autopsy Results
Investigators continue gathering evidence as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death. The results of the medical examination are expected to play a key role in determining whether additional charges are appropriate.
For now, the case remains under active investigation as detectives seek to establish a complete timeline of events leading up to the child’s death.
