Fort Myers, Florida — A Florida man is facing multiple felony charges after investigators say he shot and killed his mother before setting her body on fire inside their home, later telling detectives he acted because she had once said she wanted to be cremated. The shocking case unfolded Saturday and remains under active investigation by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
911 Calls Led Authorities to a Deadly Discovery
According to investigators, George Beemer, 23, called 911 from his Fort Myers home on Saturday, complaining of chest pain. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital for evaluation.
While Beemer was en route to the hospital, dispatchers received another 911 call reporting a fire at the same residence.
Firefighters quickly responded and entered the home to extinguish the blaze. Inside, they discovered the severely burned body of Beemer’s mother, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The circumstances immediately raised concerns for investigators, prompting a homicide investigation.
Detectives Say Suspect Confessed to Killing His Mother
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, detectives determined there was probable cause to believe Beemer shot his mother before intentionally setting the house on fire.
During questioning, investigators said Beemer admitted that he shot his mother once, then poured gasoline around her body and ignited the fire.
According to the arrest report, he allegedly told detectives he set the fire because “she wanted to be cremated.”
Sheriff Carmine Marceno praised detectives, crime scene investigators, and fire personnel for recognizing early signs that the fire was suspicious and for quickly gathering evidence that led to Beemer’s arrest.
Suspect Claimed Years of Abuse
Investigators said Beemer also claimed he had endured years of mistreatment by his mother, including allegations that she had sexually abused him as a child.
He reportedly told detectives he had reached a breaking point after years of built-up anger.
However, those allegations have been strongly denied by someone who knew the victim.
A close friend of Beemer’s mother told local reporters there was “absolutely no way” the abuse claims were true and suggested the accusations were being used to justify the killing.
Authorities have not publicly released any evidence supporting Beemer’s allegations, and investigators have not indicated whether those claims are part of the ongoing inquiry.
Friends React to the Arrest
The case has stunned people who knew Beemer. Former classmate Madison Edwards said she was shocked to learn of his arrest.
While she said she was not entirely surprised that he eventually encountered legal trouble, she described the allegations surrounding his mother’s death as something she never expected.
