Azle, Texas — A Father’s Day gathering in North Texas ended in tragedy after a 25-year-old woman was fatally shot during a domestic dispute, leading to murder charges against her father, according to law enforcement officials.
The Parker County Sheriff’s Office announced that Charles Tod Brooks, 61, has been charged with murder in connection with the death of his daughter, Rebekah Bailey Brooks.
Authorities say the incident unfolded inside a residence in Azle, a community located northwest of Fort Worth, where deputies responded to reports of a gunshot victim on Sunday.
Deputies Found Woman Suffering From Gunshot Wound
According to investigators, emergency crews were dispatched after receiving a 911 call reporting a shooting at a residence.
When deputies arrived, they located an adult woman suffering from a gunshot wound and immediately began lifesaving efforts. Fire rescue personnel and paramedics soon arrived and continued CPR and emergency treatment.
Despite those efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim was later identified as Rebekah Bailey Brooks, 25, according to information released following an autopsy conducted by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Fight Between Mother and Daughter Preceded Shooting
Investigators said witness statements indicated the incident began as a physical altercation between Rebekah Brooks and her mother.
According to the sheriff’s office, the dispute escalated inside the home before Charles Brooks attempted to intervene.
Authorities allege that during the confrontation, Brooks retrieved a handgun, loaded it, and chambered a round before trying to separate the two women.
Investigators say Brooks later admitted to handling the firearm during the incident. According to his account, the gun discharged while he was attempting to break up the fight.
“It was Mr. Brooks’ account that while attempting to separate the two women the gun was fired and the bullet struck the victim in the chest,” investigators stated.
The shooting proved fatal.
Authorities Charge Father With Murder
Law enforcement officials said investigators quickly determined that the victim’s father was responsible for the fatal gunshot.
Although Brooks reportedly told investigators the shooting was accidental, authorities ultimately arrested him and charged him with one count of murder.
The circumstances that led to the argument between Rebekah Brooks and her mother have not been publicly disclosed. Investigators have also not released additional details regarding exactly how the firearm discharged during the confrontation.
Brooks remains in custody at the Parker County Jail.
Bond Set at $2 Million
According to the sheriff’s office, a local justice of the peace set Brooks’ bond at $2 million. Court records indicate the case had not yet been fully docketed online following the arrest.
