Shirley, New York — Three people have been indicted on murder charges after prosecutors accused them of carrying out a brutal attack that left a Long Island man dead, alleging the victim’s former girlfriend planned the deadly assault following the end of their relationship.
According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, Melissa Fawcett, 50, Korey Sammarco, 36, and Benjamin Sheppard, 34, were indicted on charges including second-degree murder and gang assault in the death of 48-year-old Christopher Martin.
Authorities said the attack occurred on the evening of June 14 at Martin’s home in Shirley, where Sammarco had previously rented a room.
Prosecutors Say Attack Began With a Sledgehammer
Investigators allege the three defendants went to Martin’s home at approximately 7 p.m., where Sammarco allegedly forced his way into the victim’s bedroom by kicking down the door.
According to prosecutors, Sammarco allegedly struck Martin in the head with a sledgehammer, beginning what authorities described as a violent assault that lasted roughly 30 minutes.
Officials said tensions had already been building before the incident. Prosecutors allege Sammarco had recently been removed from the home after disputes with Martin, while Martin had also recently ended his relationship with Fawcett.
Court testimony indicated that the breakup allegedly fueled growing hostility between Fawcett and the victim.
Former Girlfriend Accused of Planning the Attack
During a court hearing on July 1, prosecutors alleged that Fawcett was the mastermind behind the deadly assault.
Assistant District Attorney Sheetal Shetty told the court that after Martin ended the relationship, Fawcett repeatedly attempted to reconnect by bringing him gifts. The day before the alleged attack, prosecutors said she arrived at Martin’s home again but was not allowed inside.
Investigators also allege that Fawcett purchased a firearm she intended to use to intimidate Martin.
“She, our investigation revealed, is actually the individual who set this entire event up.”
According to prosecutors, the investigation suggests the alleged attack was planned rather than spontaneous.
Victim Allegedly Beaten With Multiple Objects
Authorities allege the assault became increasingly violent as several objects were used against Martin.
According to court documents, Sammarco allegedly admitted to striking the victim with a sledgehammer, a television and his fists.
Prosecutors also allege Fawcett admitted she took “a couple of shots at him” during the attack.
Investigators said Sammarco later told police that additional individuals, including Sheppard, participated in the assault, which allegedly involved a baseball bat and dumbbells.
Authorities further allege that Fawcett smashed Martin’s cellphone outside the home, preventing him from calling for emergency assistance.
Victim Died After Suffering Extensive Injuries
Police said another resident of the home discovered Martin following the assault and called 911 at approximately 7:30 p.m. Martin was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Prosecutors said the victim suffered severe facial trauma, broken ribs, a liver laceration and significant internal bleeding. Fawcett and Sammarco were arrested on June 15, while Sheppard was taken into custody on June 20.
All three defendants remain held without bail. Court records show Fawcett and Sammarco are scheduled to return to court on Aug. 6, while Sheppard’s next court appearance is set for Aug. 10.
The charges represent allegations, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
