Katy, Texas — A birthday celebration ended in tragedy after a 20-year-old Texas man was arrested on suspicion of intoxication manslaughter following a crash that claimed the life of another driver, according to investigators.
The fatal collision occurred early Tuesday morning in Katy, where authorities say a BMW allegedly driven by the suspect struck another vehicle, causing it to leave the roadway and crash into fixed objects.
The incident remains under investigation as officials continue gathering evidence.
Fatal Crash Leaves One Driver Dead
According to the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the crash shortly after 2 a.m. on June 23. Preliminary investigators said a white BMW collided with a black Cadillac driven by 53-year-old Sung Bae.
Emergency responders pronounced Bae dead at the scene. Officials said the impact caused the Cadillac to leave the roadway before striking a light pole and two trees.
Authorities have not released additional information regarding the events leading up to the collision.
Investigators Allege Driver Had Been Drinking
According to a probable cause affidavit, investigators believe the BMW driver, Dejon Fortune, 20, had been celebrating his birthday before the crash.
Court documents allege Fortune told officers he attended a birthday gathering at a friend’s home before later leaving to visit a Taco Bell restaurant.
The affidavit further states that Fortune admitted consuming alcohol but reportedly could not recall when he had his last drink.
Authorities allege the BMW involved in the crash belonged to Fortune’s father. Investigators continue reviewing evidence as part of the ongoing case.
Passengers Provide Statements to Investigators
Police said two passengers were riding inside the BMW at the time of the crash. According to the affidavit, one passenger allegedly told investigators that alcohol was removed from the vehicle after the collision.
Authorities also allege that another passenger estimated the BMW was traveling between 70 and 80 miles per hour before the crash. Those statements remain part of the investigative record as prosecutors move forward with the case.
Officials have not publicly disclosed additional evidence regarding vehicle speed or impairment testing.
Sheriff Urges Drivers to Make Safe Choices
Following the fatal crash, Fort Bend County Sheriff Eric Fagan expressed condolences to the victim’s family while emphasizing the dangers of impaired driving.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Mr. Bae as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.”
Fagan also urged motorists to avoid driving after consuming alcohol.
“Impaired driving continues to claim innocent lives in our community. We urge everyone to make responsible choices and never get behind the wheel while under the influence.”
The sheriff’s office continues investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Criminal Case Continues
Fortune has been charged with felony intoxication manslaughter in connection with the crash.
As of the latest available information, authorities have not announced whether he has entered a plea. The case will continue through the Texas court system as prosecutors present evidence and investigators complete their review.
Meanwhile, family members and loved ones continue mourning the loss of Sung Bae, whose life was tragically cut short in the early morning collision.
