Madison, Wisconsin — A fatal police shooting near the Wisconsin State Capitol has sparked protests and prompted an independent investigation after authorities said an officer shot a man who allegedly stabbed him with a knife during an attempted arrest.
The incident unfolded Wednesday in one of Madison’s busiest neighborhoods, where restaurants, bars, shops and residential homes line the streets. Within minutes, cellphone footage of the shooting began circulating on social media, showing part of the confrontation as three gunshots could be heard.
Police Say Officer Opened Fire After Alleged Knife Attack
According to Madison Police Chief John Patterson, officers were responding to reports that someone was attempting to enter parked vehicles in the area.
Police said the suspect fled on a bicycle through nearby backyards before officers caught up with him on a city street.
During the encounter, Patterson said the man either fell from his bicycle or was removed from it by officers. As officers attempted to take him into custody, police allege the suspect pulled out a knife and injured one of the responding officers.
Authorities said another officer deployed a Taser, but it was unsuccessful.
Police said the same officer who had been injured then fired his weapon, striking the suspect. The man was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
Officials said the officer involved is a veteran member of the Madison Police Department, but no additional identifying information has been released.
Cellphone Video Captured Part of the Incident
Videos recorded by witnesses quickly spread online following the shooting, drawing widespread attention.
However, Chief Patterson cautioned against relying solely on the circulating footage when evaluating what occurred.
“I want to take a moment to honestly and sincerely offer my heartfelt sympathies to his family for this loss,” Patterson said.
He also emphasized that the video represents only one perspective of the incident and that investigators will examine all available evidence.
Police have not publicly identified the man who died, saying only that he was in his 30s.
Shooting Sparks Protests in Madison
The fatal shooting quickly drew demonstrators to the scene, with a crowd gathering near the intersection where the incident occurred.
Witnesses reported protesters chanting “Arrest the cops!” as community members demanded accountability and transparency.
The incident also renewed painful memories of the 2015 fatal police shooting of Tony Robinson, who was killed on the same street. That case sparked large demonstrations after prosecutors concluded the officer’s use of deadly force was legally justified.
Police have not released the races of either the officer involved or the man who was killed. However, community advocates said the deceased man was Black.
“Another Black man is dead on a Madison street, and our community watched him die before we even knew his name,” said Brandi Grayson, executive director of Urban Triage. “That is the cruelty of state violence.”
Independent Investigation Now Underway
Authorities said two officers were injured during the incident. One suffered a knife injury, while another officer was also hurt, although police have not explained how those injuries occurred. Two additional officers were not injured.
As required under Wisconsin law for officer-involved shootings, the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation has taken over the investigation.
Officials are expected to review witness statements, body camera footage, surveillance video and forensic evidence before determining the full sequence of events.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not announced when additional information, including the identity of the man who was killed, will be released.
