Urgent Recall Popular Clothing Brand Pulled 6,000 Sweaters Over Fire Risk That Could Cause Serious Burns or Death

United States — Thousands of women’s sweaters sold by Madewell and T.J. Maxx are being recalled after federal safety officials determined the garments fail mandatory flammability standards, creating a potentially dangerous fire hazard.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), approximately 6,000 sweaters are affected by the nationwide recall. Officials warn that the clothing could ignite more easily than allowed under federal regulations, posing a risk of serious burn injuries or even death.

Consumers who own the recalled garments are being urged to stop wearing them immediately.

Which Sweaters Are Being Recalled?

The recall covers two women’s sweater styles sold under the Madewell brand:

  • Double V-Neck Pullover
  • V-Neck Cardigan

The affected sweaters were sold in light blue and cream color options.

According to the CPSC, the garments “violate the mandatory standard for clothing textiles, posing a risk of serious burn injuries or death.”

The sweaters were available at Madewell and T.J. Maxx retail stores, as well as through both companies’ websites, between December 2024 and October 2025.

How to Tell if Your Sweater Is Part of the Recall

Consumers can determine whether their sweater is included by checking the labels inside the garment.

The recalled products feature:

  • A “Madewell” neck label.
  • A side seam label displaying style numbers NT611 or NT612.
  • Or the production code “HO24.”

Anyone who finds one of these identifiers should stop using the sweater immediately.

One Fire Incident Reported

Although no injuries have been reported, the company has received one report of a recalled sweater catching fire.

That incident prompted further investigation, which found the garments failed to meet required federal flammability standards.

As a precaution, the CPSC is advising consumers not to continue wearing the affected sweaters because of the potential risk of severe burns.

How Customers Can Receive a Refund

Madewell is offering full refunds for all recalled sweaters.

To receive a refund, customers must:

  • Cut the sweater in half so it cannot be used again.
  • Take a photo showing the destroyed garment.
  • Email the photo to [email protected] following the company’s recall instructions.
  • Dispose of the sweater after receiving confirmation.

Officials say consumers should not donate, resell or continue wearing the recalled clothing because of the fire hazard.

The recall serves as another reminder for shoppers to pay attention to product safety notices and check whether items in their homes may be affected by federal recalls.
