Fairfield, Connecticut — A morning fishing trip turned into a major rescue operation after two fishermen became trapped on a reef by rising waters off a Connecticut beach, leaving one man missing and prompting an extensive multi-agency search effort.
The incident unfolded around 7 a.m. Saturday near Penfield Beach in Fairfield, where emergency responders were called after reports that two fishermen were stranded on a reef as the tide rapidly moved in.
Authorities say one fisherman was rescued along with a witness who attempted to help, while a second fisherman remains missing.
Fishermen Became Trapped as Water Quickly Rose
According to the Fairfield Fire Department, the two fishermen were standing on a reef when incoming tides unexpectedly surrounded the area.
The rapidly rising water left the pair stranded with no safe route back to shore. As conditions worsened, a witness who saw the emergency unfold entered the water in an attempt to help the trapped fishermen.
Officials said the witness successfully reached one of the men, but both were eventually swept into deeper water by the strong conditions.
The situation quickly escalated into a large-scale rescue operation involving local, state, and federal agencies.
Witness’s Quick Actions Help Save a Life
Emergency responders deployed multiple marine units to search for the individuals in the water.
The Fairfield Police Boat was ultimately able to locate and rescue both the witness and one of the fishermen. Officials credited the witness’s bravery and quick response with helping save the fisherman’s life.
The rescued fisherman was transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to recover. Authorities said he suffered non-life-threatening injuries, thanks in large part to the actions of the witness who risked their own safety to help.
As rescue crews worked to bring survivors to safety, efforts intensified to locate the second fisherman.
Massive Search Effort Fails to Locate Missing Man
Numerous agencies responded to assist in the search, creating a large operation across the shoreline and surrounding waters. Drone units from Fairfield and neighboring Westport joined the effort, providing aerial surveillance of the area.
Helicopters from both the U.S. Coast Guard and Nassau County, New York, were also dispatched to assist. In addition, dive teams from several nearby cities and towns participated in the search operation.
Despite the extensive response and hours of searching, crews were unable to locate the second fisherman before nightfall. Officials later suspended active search operations for the evening.
Search Transitions to Recovery Mission
Authorities have identified the missing fisherman as Kwahiwi Edwards, 34, of Queens, New York. As of Saturday night, Edwards had not been found.

The Fairfield Fire Department announced that the operation has transitioned from a search-and-rescue effort to a recovery mission, reflecting the challenging circumstances and the length of time that has passed since the incident occurred.
Search teams are expected to resume operations as they continue working to locate Edwards.
Community Support Continues as Search Moves Forward
Officials expressed gratitude to all agencies that participated in the response and acknowledged the witness whose actions helped prevent an even greater tragedy.
In a statement shared on social media, the Fairfield Fire Department also offered support to Edwards’ loved ones as recovery efforts continue.
“The Fairfield Police Department and Fairfield Fire Department extend their thoughts and support to the family and loved ones of the missing fisherman as search and recovery efforts continue.”
The incident serves as a reminder of how quickly conditions can change along coastal areas, particularly around reefs and rocky shorelines where incoming tides can cut off access routes in a matter of minutes.
