South Florida — A U.S. Postal Service employee in Florida is facing multiple criminal charges after investigators accused her of stealing a winning lottery ticket from the mail and cashing in the prize herself.
Authorities say the ticket was originally sent to help a grieving family member pay for funeral expenses, making the alleged theft even more devastating for the intended recipient.
The case was uncovered through a joint investigation involving the Florida Lottery Division of Security and the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General.
Lottery Ticket Never Reached Its Intended Recipient
According to investigators, the incident began when a Florida resident purchased a lottery ticket and later discovered it was worth $2,600.
Rather than redeem the prize personally, the winner mailed the ticket to a family relative in South Florida to help with funeral expenses.
However, the envelope never reached its destination.
After realizing the ticket had not been delivered, the buyer contacted the Florida Lottery and reported that the winning ticket appeared to have gone missing while being handled by the U.S. Postal Service.
That complaint prompted investigators to launch a formal investigation.
Postal Worker Accused of Redeeming the Prize
Authorities allege that Lakaysha Lockhart, a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier, redeemed the winning ticket on June 19 at the Florida Lottery’s Miami District Office.
Under Florida Lottery rules, prizes worth more than $599 cannot be claimed at retail locations and must instead be redeemed at an official lottery office.
Investigators say the ticket’s $2,600 prize required exactly that process. Following the investigation, Lockhart was arrested on July 23 in connection with the alleged theft.
Investigators Say She Admitted to the Theft
According to the Florida Lottery, Lockhart admitted to stealing the winning ticket and redeeming it during questioning after her arrest.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding how investigators linked the missing ticket to the postal employee, but officials said the joint investigation successfully uncovered the alleged scheme.
The case highlights the cooperation between state lottery investigators and federal postal authorities in examining suspected mail-related crimes.
Multiple Criminal Charges Filed
Following her arrest, Lockhart was charged with several offenses, including:
- Grand theft
- Mail theft
- Dealing in stolen property
- Filing a false claim for payment
- Two counts of unlawful use of a two-way communications device
According to the Florida Lottery, the alleged offenses occurred across multiple judicial circuits, meaning the criminal cases will be prosecuted separately.
Officials Stress Importance of Lottery Security
Following the arrest, Florida Lottery Secretary Reginald D. Dixon praised the investigators involved in the case.
He said lottery players deserve confidence that every prize is protected through strong security measures and careful oversight, while thanking the Florida Lottery Division of Security, the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office for their collaborative efforts.
The criminal proceedings against Lockhart are ongoing, and the allegations will be resolved through the court process.
