One of the Strongest El Niños in Recorded History Could Be Coming, and Colorado May Be in for a Much Snowier Winter

Denver, Colorado — Snow lovers across Colorado could have plenty to watch this winter as a potentially historic El Niño continues strengthening over the Pacific Ocean.

Forecasters are increasingly focused on the possibility that the 2026-27 El Niño could become one of the strongest events ever recorded. If the warming trend continues into winter, the climate pattern could increase the availability of Pacific moisture for storms affecting parts of Colorado.

That does not mean every location is guaranteed to have a blockbuster snow season. But for skiers, snowboarders and residents hoping for major snowstorms, the developing pattern is offering a reason for optimism.

El Niño Has Strengthened Through Summer

According to information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, sea surface temperatures associated with El Niño strengthened from July into early August.

Temperatures increased by more than 1 to 2 degrees Celsius, supporting earlier forecasts that a very strong El Niño could develop during the upcoming fall and winter.

Current projections put the odds of a very strong El Niño at about 90% during the 2026-27 season.

The potential strength of the event is what has particularly caught forecasters’ attention.

If the warming continues and El Niño reaches its expected winter peak, there is reportedly a 69% chance that it could become stronger than previous events dating back to 1950, potentially even challenging the remarkable strength of the 1982-83 El Niño.

Strong El Niño Does Not Guarantee a Snowy Winter

Despite the encouraging outlook for snow lovers, a powerful El Niño does not automatically translate into record snowfall across Colorado.

Instead, the climate pattern can increase the availability of moisture and shift storm tracks, creating a more favorable background setup for certain parts of the state.

During many El Niño winters, the main storm track shifts farther south. That can allow more Pacific moisture to move toward the Southwest and southern Rocky Mountains.

For Colorado’s southern mountains, that can be particularly beneficial.

Southern Colorado Mountains Could Benefit Most

Areas including Wolf Creek, Telluride, Purgatory and the San Juan Mountains could have an increased chance of seeing normal to above-normal snowfall if the expected pattern develops.

The reason is relatively straightforward: El Niño can help steer moisture toward areas that are otherwise dependent on the right combination of Pacific storms and cold air.

For ski resorts and mountain communities, more frequent moisture-bearing storms could potentially mean additional powder opportunities throughout the season.

But the story becomes more complicated farther north.

Denver Needs the Right Ingredients for Big Snow

For Denver and Colorado’s Front Range, El Niño alone is not enough to guarantee major snowstorms.

One of the best setups for a significant Denver snow event occurs when moisture moves in from the southwest while a cold low-pressure system develops near southeastern Colorado.

That combination can generate an easterly flow against the Front Range, creating the upslope conditions that help snow develop and persist along the eastern side of the mountains.

Record-Breaking Snow Could Be Coming to California as Powerful El Niño Pattern Sets Up an Active Winter Storm Season

The challenge is that both ingredients have to arrive at the right time.

If El Niño provides abundant moisture but there is not enough cold air or the right low-pressure system, the storm may produce rain, mixed precipitation or little snow in Denver.

On the other hand, a cold storm system without sufficient moisture may also fail to deliver a major snowfall.

Winter Snow Potential Depends on How It All Comes Together

That is why forecasters are stopping short of promising a historic Colorado winter despite the potentially powerful El Niño.

The developing climate pattern may stack the odds in favor of more moisture and favorable storm tracks, particularly across southern Colorado, but individual storms will still depend on short-term weather conditions.

For Denver and the Front Range, the biggest snow days will require the moisture, cold air, low pressure and upslope flow to line up at just the right time.

For now, however, the developing El Niño is giving Colorado snow enthusiasts something to watch.

If the Pacific warming continues as expected into winter, 2026-27 could feature an unusually strong El Niño, potentially ranking among the strongest events observed in modern records.

And while that does not guarantee a season filled with powder, it could provide more opportunities for significant snow across parts of Colorado.
