Minerva, Ohio — A routine drive along an Ohio highway ended in a devastating tragedy over the weekend when a massive tree suddenly toppled from a wooded area and crashed onto an SUV, killing a 35-year-old mother of three.
Bridget E. Reagan of Minerva was behind the wheel of a 2023 Jeep Wagoneer traveling west on US Route 30 in Paris Township at approximately 5:24 p.m. Saturday when the tree fell onto her vehicle, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Reagan was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are investigating what caused the tree to come down so suddenly.
Investigators Examine Why Tree Fell
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said investigators are looking into several possibilities, including whether the ground had become saturated or whether the tree was already weakened or rotting.
Lt. Johnnie Maier told that investigators were trying to determine whether saturated ground or decay played a role in the tree’s collapse. At this point, authorities said the circumstances appeared consistent with what they described as an “act of God.”
“This could have happened to anybody, but in this case, it happened to a young lady with a family,” Maier said.
The heartbreaking circumstances have left Reagan’s loved ones struggling to understand how such a sudden event could take the life of a young mother.
Beloved Minerva Business Owner Remembered
Reagan was more than a mother. She was also a small-business owner and prominent member of the Minerva community, where she operated Chic Haven, a boutique specializing in clothing and home décor.
News of her death quickly spread throughout the close-knit community, prompting an outpouring of grief from residents, customers, friends and fellow business owners.
The Minerva Area Chamber of Commerce offered its deepest condolences to Reagan’s family and described her as a valued member of the local business community.
The chamber said Reagan brought “an incredible amount of energy, warmth, and joy” to those around her and said the impact she made would not be forgotten.
Reagan Also Worked to Help Others
Reagan was known for giving back beyond her business.
In a Facebook post last year, she encouraged friends to celebrate her birthday by donating to SAVE22 Veterans, an Ohio nonprofit focused on supporting veterans and raising awareness about veteran suicide.
She explained at the time that the organization’s mission was personally meaningful to her and asked friends to consider supporting the cause rather than simply celebrating her birthday.
Her generosity is now being remembered alongside her work as a business owner and mother.
Family Vows to Preserve Her Legacy
Chic Haven Boutique confirmed Reagan’s death in an emotional Facebook message signed by her sister, Kelly.
The family described the loss as overwhelming, saying there were “no words” capable of expressing the heartbreak they were experiencing.
The post said Reagan had poured love, time and passion into her business while touching countless lives in the community. Her family also promised to do what they could to honor her memory and preserve the legacy she created.
Three Children Left Without Their Mother
A GoFundMe organized by Reagan’s sister is raising money for funeral and memorial expenses as well as support for her three children.
The fundraiser described Reagan as a loving mother whose children were “the center of her world.”
Friends and customers have also shared memories online, describing Reagan as someone who welcomed others, offered advice and made time for people even when she was busy.
Some remembered her as “such a light in our little community,” while others praised her kindness and supportive nature.
Local Businesses Keep Her Memory Alive
Reagan’s influence has also inspired other local businesses to support her family.
Gardner Candle Co. announced a memorial candle featuring a fragrance Reagan particularly loved, with 100% of the profits going to her family.
The company remembered Reagan as someone who had supported its business and frequently partnered with the owner on community events.
“Some people leave a light behind that can never be dimmed. Bridget Reagan was one of those beautiful souls,” the company wrote.
For the Minerva community, Reagan’s death is a devastating reminder of how quickly an ordinary afternoon can become a tragedy. She leaves behind three children, a family, a business and a community filled with people who say her kindness will not be forgotten.
