Washington Township, New Jersey — A New Jersey family is mourning the heartbreaking loss of their 3-year-old son, Elijah “Eli,” after a backyard pool accident claimed his life, leaving loved ones and the local community devastated.
The tragic incident happened on June 27 in Washington Township. Since then, Eli’s parents have shared emotional tributes describing the unimaginable moments that changed their lives forever while encouraging other families to cherish every moment with their children.
Father Describes the Heartbreaking Moments Before Finding His Son
According to Eli’s father, Mike Stephen, the tragedy unfolded after he noticed his daughter’s clothes were wet inside the family home.
In an emotional social media post, he explained that when he asked Eli’s twin sister, Ella, why she was wet, she simply replied, “pool.”
Stephen said he immediately noticed the back door had been opened, causing him to fear the worst.
“Saturday night our lives changed forever,” Stephen wrote.
He said he and his wife rushed outside and encountered what he described as “the worst thing any parent could ever see.”
While Eli’s mother, Sandi Shevlin, called 911, Stephen immediately began CPR until emergency responders arrived and transported the child to a nearby hospital.
Doctors Restored His Heartbeat, But He Could Not Recover
According to Stephen, doctors were able to restore Eli’s heartbeat after he arrived at the hospital.
However, despite the medical team’s efforts, the swelling in the little boy’s brain was too severe.
“Nothing more can be done,” Stephen wrote.
The grieving father admitted he continues to replay the events in his mind and struggles with feelings of guilt over not being able to save his son.
“The images will forever be burned into my mind. I wasn’t fast enough,” he shared. “[I’ll] spend the rest of my days wondering what could have been. What he would have done. How Elijah could have changed the world.”
Despite his overwhelming grief, Stephen said he would always remember Eli as “the sweet and gentle soul he is.”
Parents Honor Their Son’s Memory Through Organ Donation
In one of the family’s most selfless decisions, Stephen shared that they planned to donate Eli’s organs in hopes of helping other families.
“If we have the ability to prevent another parent from knowing this feeling, I’ll do what I can. Elijah would want that as well.”
Eli’s mother also posted an emotional tribute expressing her heartbreak.
“My son, my sweet and beautiful, handsome son. I’m so sorry I failed you and couldn’t protect you. I’m forever broken,” she wrote. “You were too good for this earth. You are the strongest boy there is and you make mommy so proud.”
Community Rallies Around Grieving Family
The loss has deeply affected the Washington Township community.
Council President Peter Del Borrello III described Eli as a joyful child whose kindness touched everyone who knew him.
“Our community has always shown that when one family hurts, we all hurt. Today, Mike and Sandi need that love and support more than ever.”
He added that Eli’s bright smile, beautiful blue eyes, and kind heart would never be forgotten despite his young age.
A GoFundMe campaign organized by Eli’s aunt has also been launched to help the family with expenses, grief counseling and specialized support for Eli’s twin sister, Ella, and older brother, Mickey, as they begin the difficult journey of healing.
