San Francisco, California — What began as an attempt to calm a heated argument in downtown San Francisco ended in violence early Saturday when four Good Samaritans were shot after stepping in to break up a dispute between a man and a woman, according to police. The suspect fled the scene, leaving all four victims hospitalized but expected to survive.
Good Samaritans Shot While Trying to Stop Argument
According to the San Francisco Police Department, the shooting happened just before 1 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Mason and Market streets in the city’s Tenderloin District.
Investigators said the four men did not know the couple involved in the confrontation. They reportedly saw a man and woman arguing in public and attempted to intervene in hopes of de-escalating the situation.
Instead of ending peacefully, police say the encounter quickly turned violent.
Authorities allege that the man involved in the argument suddenly pulled out a firearm and opened fire, striking all four men who had stepped in to help.
Victims Hospitalized but Expected to Recover
Emergency responders rushed the victims to nearby hospitals following the shooting.
Police said all four men suffered gunshot injuries, but they are expected to survive. Officials have not released details about the severity of their injuries, their identities, or their ages.

However, Bilal Mahmood, supervisor for San Francisco’s District 5, said authorities had made significant progress in identifying those involved.

In a post on X, Mahmood said he personally visited the crime scene and spoke with responding officers shortly after the shooting.
He wrote, “I was present at the crime scene and spoke to officers on the scene. Thanks to the actions of SFPD and RTIC, suspects have been identified.”
Mahmood also thanked emergency responders for their quick response, adding that officials would continue monitoring the investigation as it develops.
Police Continue Searching for Suspect
Authorities have not announced whether multiple people were involved or whether the identified suspects include the alleged shooter.
