Jackson, Mississippi — Former Jackson State football player Levi Wyatt has died following a late-night vehicle crash in Jackson, Mississippi. The 23-year-old former defensive back was killed after the car he was driving struck a utility pole, while another passenger suffered life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision that has left the Jackson State football community mourning one of its former players.
Late-Night Crash Claimed the Life of 23-Year-Old Athlete
According to the Mississippi Capitol Police, officers responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of North State Street and Belhaven Street at approximately 12:14 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1.
When officers arrived, they found that two vehicles had sustained damage during the incident.
Investigators said one of the vehicles, a Chevrolet Camaro, had crashed into a nearby utility pole. The driver suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger traveling in the Camaro was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the second vehicle was not injured, according to police.
Local media later identified the Camaro’s driver as Levi Wyatt.
Jackson State Football Pays Emotional Tribute
Following news of Wyatt’s death, Jackson State Football released a heartfelt statement honoring the former player.
The program described Wyatt as a valued member of its football family, writing that “The bond of this brotherhood does not end when the game clock expires.”
The statement continued by saying his memory would forever remain part of Jackson State Football and asked supporters to keep Wyatt’s family and loved ones in their prayers during the difficult time.

Wyatt Built an Impressive College Football Career
Wyatt spent one season with the Jackson State Tigers in 2025, helping the program reach the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) East Division Championship.
Before transferring to Jackson State, he played for McNeese State, where he developed into one of the conference’s standout defensive players.
His performances earned him Second-Team All-Southland Conference honors in 2024, along with selection to the 2024 Phil Steele All-Southland Conference Team.
Those accomplishments helped establish Wyatt as a respected player before continuing his football journey at Jackson State.
